| To Register or Not Register? That is the question I was wondering how important is it for me to register Maximus if we are not planning on breeding him. Is there other reasons that I don't know of?

Donating YT 10K Club Member | It's not...unless you decide you want to participate in AKC events. I have one that is registered AKC, one that could be but is not....and Reggie who can never be.

| I have a question.. do you have to have your dog AKC registered to participate in agility competitions? Just a random thought. If you're not going to breed I don't see the point in registering him. |

| My pup came with pre-registration for the CKC, but I'm not going to bother. Ollie's conformation is all wrong - long rangy legs, long face, tilted ears. They'd laugh him out of the ring. Plus he's getting snipped as soon as possible. Probably the most fun thing about registering a dog is getting to pick a cool pedigree name for them.. |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Yes it needs to be registered to participate in agility events. Dogs who aren't AKC registered must be registered with AKC alternative to participate.

| If you mean the Continental Kennel Club, don't waste your money! If you decide you want to participate in AKC events later (not conformation), you can always get an ILP number. Your dog has to be neutered/spayed and you have to send in pics proving that he looks like a yorkie. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I registered Joey with the AKC because I believe in it, and what they are trying to accomplish. The AKC is the only registry that does routine announced inspections, and they need money to do these inspections. While many puppy mills still enjoy AKC status, I'm am hopeful that in the future this will not be true. The AKC seems to be trying hard to rid themselves of these breeders, but this takes money. Registration is only $20.00, and we opted for the lifetime lost and found option, which includes his microchip or other identifying number for a total of $35.00. The tag was worth that; it's really nice.

I wanted to say something like that, but you said it better than I could have. Those are the reasons I choose to have my other dog registered w/ AKC. That and registration papers can be used as proof of ownership for whatever reason. If pet owners support the AKC, then they will have less need to rely on puppymillers for income.

| Great question!!! Well I havent registered her with AKC yet because she I was waiting to get her micro chipped so I can put that number along with her application for the lost and found pet recovery service. She just got spayed and Micro chipped yesterday and I when i picked her up they gave me another brochure for her micro chip that I'm suppose to send in that is called AKC Companion Animal Recovery ID System That cost another $25.00. Am I suppose to send in both or are they two different things I'm so confused!! Hopefully someone can tell me what to do because the Vet Tech had no idea.

For both registration and pet lost and found it's $35.00, twenty dollars for registration and an additional $15.00 for the lost and found. The AKC companion Animal Recovery ID system may be for dogs who aren't eligible for regular registration, in other words any dog could be registered through the Recovery ID system, but a dog registered with the AKC is different and entitled to different benefits, than one just registered with the Animal Recovery system. Here's a link to the fee schedule: https://www.akc.org/reg/fee_schedule.cfm

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Puppy mills have huge lobbies, it takes lots of individual citizens to stand together and fight them. Oprah, and her audience made a difference in Pennsylvania, the governor got on board and passed some great laws, but it was touch and go for a while. Even some people here on Yorkietalk seems more interested in buying a cheap dog, than making sure that the conditions in which the dogs live are humane. I encourage everyone to go see for themselves where the dogs are being raised, this is really the only way we can make a difference. Many people say that it's too inconvenient to do this.

I agree completely. I understand having a puppy shipped from a well known show breeder. If it just a regular old puppy (without ch parents, health testing, etc.), why not buy close to home where you can see where the pup is raised. I would have a hard time, buying from someone without visiting their home. IMHO, the internet was a godsend to puppymillers. They can sell directly to the public w/o paying a broker or obeying the USDA's ridiculously low standards. I'm not saying you can't find a good breeder via the internet. Just that you shouldn't be able to buy a puppy the same way you would order a microwave from Overstock.com.
