Help- Teeth, Coat, and Ears Some of you may know I went to see a perfect little Yorkie, house trained, good with people/dogs, rarely barks. Perfect. Anyways, I am taking him until Tuesday to see if he works out. If we are leaning towards keeping him we are taking him to the vet on Monday for a checkup. So, I noticed a few things. First is that he has really itchy ears. Not all the time, but when you rub them he kind of wants to to scratch his ears. It is not because he likes it they are itchy. He sometimes shakes his head when you touch near his ears. I looked and he has hair in his ears and I read that was supposed to be removed. Next, his coat looks liked this dog (and he does): http://www.top-dogs-names.com/images/yorkie.jpg It seems to tangle fairly easy (it has been wet- could that be the cause?) but has darker colors than that dog and is a little more silky. His hair is about 3-4 inches long so that may be another cause of tangles. Finally, he has two teeth next to each other. They don't seem to bother him but I think they would need to be removed. How much would this cost? Does anyone have a picture of how a Yorkies mouth is supposed to look? He is almost a year old so maybe it is baby teeth or something? I don't know when they lose their teeth. I want to be prepared for what costs I'm going to have to deal with. I posted this here instead of in grooming because I only have him for a few days and I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing by keeping him or not. Vanessa

Vanessa, He probably has an ear infection--- the doctor would have to see that. Izze was having horrible ear infections when she first came to me... and i'd put the drops in and clean them myself but nothing worked, until I took her to my new groomer. Now, I don't pluck...just wash her hair (with cotton balls in her ears), clean her ears, and put ear powder for drying. The groomer gives her a real good ear clean every 6-8 weeks. Please realize that this is not going to be a perfect dog. You using that word concerns me. He is going to have issues--especially since he is adjusting to a new home. I have 4 dogs---2 from puppyhood, 2 rescues and none of them are perfect. Your parents must understand this. Oh. And dogs are very expensive, especially with dentals. I have to take mine for dentals every year, and it costs me $400-$700 (+) for each dog for a teeth cleaning(I make sure that ALL precautions are made, including the vet administering the anesthesia, constant monitoring, constant iv fluid and watching the blood sugar). Then you have to add on exams, shots, unforseen circumstances, food, toys, etc... Not trying to discourage you, but you have to be realistic and your parents need to know that this is an expensive, time consuming, lifelong responsibility. He won't be perfect...but he will be worth it!

Donating YT 500 Club Member | With ears itching it could be ear mites, an infection or possibly both, only a vet can tell you. Either one can be treated easily and not too expensively. The teeth are retained puppy teeth and are best removed when he is neutered. At his age, most that would fall out on their own have done so already. The cost will vary depending upon where you live. In our area (less expensive than most) a spay, pre-op blood work and having 10 puppy teeth removed cost me close to $300. Any yorkie with longer hair will tangle and mat, some more than others depending on coat type. With grooming daily you can keep the tangling and mats to a minimum....or you can choose to keep him cut down and almost completely eliminate the tangling altogether. Good luck and let us know how it goes with is trial visit.

Don't worry, I have considered the long term affects. I know he is not perfect. I just meant he is an exceptional Yorkie. It is hard to come buy an adult Yorkie that is housetrained (for the most part, she leaves him for 11 hours and he's fine), good with all other dogs and people, absolutely loves to be groomed, and rarely barks. He may not be perfect, but I am determined to train him to be a great dog. I am training him not to go on the couch/beds unless he is given permission, training him on the leash, etc. He had two accidents in the house even though I let him out twice an hour plus a walk in the rain. I think it is mainly because he is not neutered and is in a new house but I'm working on the "go potty". He can go pee but pooing is the problem outside. He also learned sit, is good with my cat now, and walks right by my side on walks! I know he is going to have to see a vet. I guess I was unclear. My parents aren't sure I can keep him so if they decide I can't then I will let his owner take him to the vet instead of me. If they say I can keep him (probably) he'll go to the vet on Monday. I will have them check out his teeth too.

This will give you an idea of the cost of owning a dog, but vets in California are a lot more expensive than in other areas of the country. The Cost of Owning a Dog His retained baby teeth can be removed during his neuter. As the others said, he probably has an ear infection. He'll need bloodwork before his neuter. I'd guess upfront for all this in California you are looking at close to $500.
