| To Wear a Collar or Not To Wear a Collar I was just wondering how many of you keep collars on your little ones. I have been told not to keep a collar on a dog if you are not supervising them, such as when he is outside playing (while you are in), and when they are in their crate or x-pen in case they hang themselves. I usually let Deegan out to play by himself while I get ready for work in the mornings, but I am nervous because, should anything happen, like him slipping through the fence or what not, he won't have any identification on him. I would like for him to wear a collar with a small tag with our phone number on it, but I am scared. Do you guys have your babies wearing collars with tags on them in a situation like that or not?

| I don't know....I personally only put Maximus collar on him while I am walking him in case anything ever happened he has his tags on....but I know some people have attached their tags to the harness instead of a collar...maybe a situation liek that would be ideal...do that he can't choke or hang himself but he is still tagged???

| harnessess and collars imo are not safe to be left on the Yorkie's without supervision. Schatzie wears her harness only when we are out and about but other members mention they leave the collars/harnessess on constantly. It's personal choice and whatever you feel comfortable with. In regards to identification you can microchip them. I've never been comfortable leaving Schatzie outside alone as Im afraid something will harm her. Maybe there is a better time you can take Deegan outside when you can be with him to ease your nervousness. This way he stays safe and out of dangers way.

| I would get him a little harness and put it on there. Just incase he does get away. If he has a collar on and an honest person does intend to give him back, they may hook him up. If it is a collar he could hurt himself. However, I never leave mine out unattended. |

| ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, have their tag on them!!! You just NEVER know what could happen. You could open the door, the dog could run out and be gone! ALL my dogs have tags, big & small. And if someone or something were to let your dog out when you weren't home, at least they have a tag on. They do make safety collars for dogs that will release when pulled on. I would rather have an unhappy ALIVE dog with a tag, then a missing dog who can't find it's way back. You can even get their/your name & number embroiderred on the collar instead. But PLEASE put some type of ID on your puppy.

I wouldnt keep a collar on a little dog when you cant keep an eye on your them. Thier are too many horror stories about them getting caught on something and choking or hanging. And when you walk a dog on a collar its generally not good for thier neck. I only do collars for fashion purposes but even then I prefer necklaces. If you need something to walk your dog with I'd recommend a harness. Better support for your baby and all around safer.

| Bruce's collar comes off when I know he is going to be totally alone and when he is at daycare so he can play. If we are outside or he is visiting with someone it stays on so he has his tags on just in case. I have him microchipped but I think a tag is a good measure in case he is lost then anyone could call me without having to have him scanned.

| I also meant to add: I know that there are a lot of use that have Microchip and that is great. But I think that a dog with a collar & tag have a better chance of being returned faster than a chipped dog. With a chipped dog, you are hoping/relying that someone will take them to a vet/shelter and have them scanned. A dog with visible ID has better odds of being returned faster. Everyone has a cell phone nowadays. A call is much faster (and easier) than taking in a dog. to be scanned. And as I pointed out in an ealier post, if your dog got out by accident and you weren't home, at least there is some visible ID. Burglars can break in, earthquakes can happen (I live in CA) and its nice to know they have ID on them. Visible ID that is!

| Esme usually never wears a collar. I have heard to many stories of doggies seriously injuring themselves or killing themselves because of collars. She wears her harness when we go for a walk. She owns a collar with her tags on it, and I try to remeber to put it on her when she goes outside, but honestly, I usually forget. I NEVER attatch her leash to her collar.

| The only time Kacee wears anything (this was the case with Muffin, too) is when we go for a walk and she wears her harness. I'm too scared of an accident. She rolls and tumbles and I'm scared she could get caught on just about anything.

| Gracie has her collars. But I only put them on when I let her go outside to do her business in the morning just in case something happens. When I walk her I put on her harness and attached to her harness are her Tags. She has one with her name and address on the front and in the back it has my name, home phone number and my cell phone # and the other is her rabies tag. Even though Gracie is microchipped I feel much better if she has her tags with her just in case.
