| cutting off the puppy hair? I was thinking of just cutting off Rileys puppy hair, but he is only 6 months old. his hair has become cottony, but do you think that will help? or will it grow in the same since he is only 6 months old? or will it come in differnt, Im stuck as to what to do here, if it will come in differnt Ill do it, but if its going to come back in the same for a while yet than I would rather waite, about what age do they start getting there adult coat? any advice would help me from pulling out my own hair..lol

I shaved mine. It is just too much to take care of. In fact you can do a "nice little do" Be creative. Get a book on styles for dog hair.

| I shave everything but my Buddy's face. I give him the lion look. His face is just a little longer than the body. He looks cute. But I think next time I may change it up. Ask the groomers to see a book or what they suggest. I know my groomer has books. Boa Sorte (good luck)!

| Me too...... I would like an answer to this question, as well. Tinkerbell will be 5 months on the 18th. Her hair is about 2.5" - 3" long. It is kind of thick and fluffy on her back and sides and thin on her chest, head and legs. Her belly is bare. I have no idea if her coat is silky, cottony or "soft". Her saddle is still completely black, but her head has changed to silver. Both of her parents are registered as "black and tan" and supposedly have silky coats. But, I read somewhere on here that Yorkies with black coats are usually cottony and mat easily. ???? It seems like she gets a lot of mats close to the skin and I am wondering if that means that her coat is transitioning from puppy hair to her adult coat. Is this what is happening with your baby? Or, are you wanting to cut it for a different reason? How long is your puppy's hair right now? I was thinking of cutting her hair to make the transition easier. I am just afraid that it will grow in curly or something. I have heard of that happening. I'm not sure if that's really possible or not. Wendi and Tinkerbell |

| Dino had a bit of a cottony coat when he was a puppy, about a month ago I had him shaved and now the coat is coming in more silk and smooth. Before it was harder and more like wool. He does have a black coat with a gold face and a silver head.

| My groomer cut Katy Lou's black puppy hair off when she was about 4 months old. You don't really need to "shave" it off - just use a trimmer with a comb blade. The adult hair that was left is nice and silky and does not mat. |

| Suzi is 5 months, and due, again, to knots we had her trimmed. She looks like a miniature adult Yorkie with a coat very similar to Katie now (silky.). In fact my brother says she so much like her he can't tell the difference. Hugs Shirl x x

| Wow, I didnt realize so many of you shave your Yorkies fur. I havent had Sadie's fur cut at all yet. I have had her ears trimmed when she was younger to help them stand up (and it worked) but other than that, I havent had anything else done to her (minus her nails trimmed). I brush her fur and she seems to be fine with that. It is getting longer around her face and sides of her body and down each leg I guess. I was just going to grow it out some because its getting cold here already and I dont want her naked during this time of year. She will be 6 months old this month. Should I have her trimmed (and put a sweater on her) to get rid of the puppy fur or just leave her? Wont the puppy fur just grow out leaving the adult fur in its place anyway? |

| I always have my pups shaved down at 5 to 6 months old... I like to see what is under the puppy hair... (hey... sometimes the color is so different you aren't quite sure it's the pup you dropped off!! ). Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Shaving your puppy won't affect the way the hair grows. Hair grows under the skin, and doesn't even know it's been shaved. A Yorkies hair texture and color changes a lot in the first two years and so a shave can make it look like it's changed, but it would have looked this way anyway. Short hair always has more curl/wave to it than longer hair, so people think that shaving makes curlier hair, it doesn't, and the curl of a hair is determined under the skin. The main reason people shave is because a puppy has gotten severely matted, and shaving is the best alternative.

| Gracie's hair mats easily too. And try as she may, it was just all too much for her when I had to work out the mats each night. So for her happiness, and mine! I cut her body this summer. It also helped to keep her cool when we took our daily walks. Now, we've always groomed our own dogs, and Annie and Boo are good about standing and letting us do what needs to be done. Gracie, being only 4 months old at the time, couldn't stand still at all. She kept trying to turn around to see what the clippers where, what I was doing, basically just what was going on. So her first cut, although she did great at allowing it, turned out...well...a little choppy. She looked like one of those bobble head dolls. I don't think it helped that she weighed so little. We continue to work with the clippers so that she'll get use to them, and I hope come next summer, if we have to clip her again, she'll stand a little better and won't look like I wore a blindfold and took a dull knife to her hair. 1) Gracie's Bobble-Head Doll look...it'll be all the rage soon, just watch and see!
