Grooming a Yorkie Puppy Hi everyone, I did a search for threads related to how often a Yorkie should be bathed and did not find what I was looking for so I have created a new thread here. I thought it would be good to bathe my Rocky every 3-4 weeks or so (I heard shampoo can be irritating and drying). My family has been telling me that my Rocky can smell a bit (like a dog) though so I have bathed him when they say that. He is a dog, of course, so it is OK for him to smell like one but I am assuming it is not a good smell (I love him how he is!). How often do you other YTers bathe your Yorkies? Rocky has not gotten a haircut yet but he is almost 5 months old now and just started losing his teeth last weekend (so cute!!!). When is the 'normal' time to give your Yorkie his/her first haircut? Thanks in advance for your input, I really appreciate it!!

| Hot Rod got his first groom and haircut at 5 mos old. I was taking him every 2 mos for a groom and bathing him once in between. Lately it seems as though I bath them like every two weeks. I don't know if it is from going out in the wet grass everyday that is making them need to bathed more. But they do get really oily looking and smelly. I have a medicated shampoo and conditioner for Hot Rod and for Maggie I just have a puppy shampoo suggested from the groomer and I just used Cloud Nine conditioner on her. Also I do wipe them everytime they do their business.

I give Wrigley a bath every week. If not he gets a little smelly and he feels a little greasy.

Thanks! It sounds like it is perfectly normal then to give Rocky a bath every two weeks or so. His hair gets so soft after a bath! I will start using conditioner though, he does mat a little (probably the puppy fur) but not too bad, I try to brush him everyday but he seems more interested in biting the brush so grooming is not as effective as it could be! I think I will book him for his first haircut soon - although I will miss his dark puppy fur - it looks like he will have a lot of grey!

Yes, exactly - my guy looks greasy after a short while too! I have had comments that it looks like he has hair gel in his fur (he does not). Maybe every 1-2 weeks will work. He does not mind a bath too much, so it is not a struggle.

Reinell, I am so glad to started this post as I was starting to wonder about this stuff myself. I'm getting my first Yorkie puppy in a few weeks and was a bit confused as I've always been told not to bath my dog (chihuahua) more than like once every eight weeks. But then I heard Yorkshire Terrier need bathing a lot more regularly than that. I dont get it, why is it so different for the two breeds?! Also, should I be using a puppy shampoo to begin with or a conditioning shampoo and conditioner? Gosh, it's sooo exciting, I cant wait to get my little girl! Jess

I use a medicated shampoo because Hot Rod was very dry and itchy. He had really bad flaky skin. The vet seemed to think it might have been an allergy to (?) the treatment on our relatively new carpet. We're not sure and we're not sure if he has outgrown it now but I will continue to use this shampoo and conditioner on him at least til I run out. I would say wait until your baby comes home and after a bit to see how she fairs and talk with the vet before you decide on shampoos. she may be okay with just a puppy shampoo.

I believe the difference is due to the different coats. Chihuahua's have fur, Yorkie's have hair (similar to ours) That's why theirs gets sort of greasy looking. Can you imagine what our hair would look like if we only washed it once or twice a year. My suggestion would be to get a nice shampoo and conditioner and just watch and see when they start to look and smell funky. I like to use a puppy formula so that just in case some might get into their eyes it won't sting. I always hated that as a kid, so I would imagine they would too. Our Boo (6 yrs old) can usually go 2-3 weeks, as long as he hasn't rolled in something dead. Gracie (8 months old) it's usually every week. A good conditioner and good quality of food will go a long way in keeping their skin healthy.

wabbit - good to know her hair is not drying out even after a few baths a week (I would do it too - slobber is pretty yucky). What kind of shampoo do you use?
