| Is 16 hours alone too long??? It's breaking my heart to know that Duke might be home alone for 16hours . Is that too much? He's used to staying home for 8-9hrs when I'm at work but I just found out about an event that I need to go to and no one can really stop by to check in on him for me since this all happened last minute. I took him for a walk this morning before I went to work and left plenty of food, water, and toys out for him....I just hope that he'll be ok. Never had to leave him for so long before, I'm so nervous....

| I wouldn't leave one for that long, but if you can't help it - what can you do?

| We just moved to a new apartment and dont really know our neighbors yet. He's almost 1 year old. I'm heading home as soon as I can. I just met a dog walker in my neighborhood but don't know where he lives, I was praying that I would run into him this morning but didn't. He has access to the livingroom, kitchen/dining room. There's enough room for him to run around and play if he needs to.

| AAWWW I know how heartbreaking it is to leave them alone longer than the usual but I don't think one day is going to hurt. Just leave plenty of food and water..leave the TV & some lights on. The most I had to leave my babies was for 12 and that killed me but they survived...guess because they have eachother. |

| Take a deep breathe. Look things happen. As long as he can eat, drink, pee, poop and you are not going to be upset with him for having an accident and know he may have problems getting back on track with house training after this. Take it for what it is and that you are doing the best you can in a bad situation. We had a family member sick this summer was not 16 hours left but it was a lot of in, out, pee, crate, gone again for me all summer. Make up time this weekend lots of TLC time for us. JL

| With the economy in the state it is, I am sure you are not alone in having to leave your baby for a long period of time. It must break your heart and personally, I don't know if I could do it. BUT, remember, we do what we have to under certain circumstances. I do have some suggestions about how to handle leaving him---do not make a big deal of it. Handle it as if you were just running out to the car or something and offer him the same amount of attention and affection (and of course, treats!) when you are ready to walk out. Try not to show him that you feel sad or guilty about leaving cause these younguns pick up on that very quickly. And, it is not healthy for them. Depending on his age, I would not let him have a lot of free running space; maybe a room or so but not a whole house or apt. Also, get a sticker or find some way to let emergency personnel know that he is in the home. They need to know to look for him in an emergency (God forbid). Also, that is a reason to sorta give him space but not enough to hide or be lost if something happens. I hope you understand that I am only trying to help you think ahead and am not ever criticizing you for what you must do. Good luck with your baby and let us know how things go along. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Since you are gone for long periods at a time, it might be a good idea for you to put something like this in your window. I also think making sure no cords are out is a good thing, and some dogs find it helpful to have the television or music playing.

| I worry about this too!! My husband moved out over Labor Day weekend so now Tobey is home alone more often. I work all day and was previously in Cosmetology school 3 nights a week from 5pm-9pm, which wasn't a big deal because my husband was home. Now that he is gone, I am really worried about going back to school (even though I HAVE to finish) because Tobey will be alone from like 8am-9:45pm 3 days a week.

| I know that with a one time emergency there isn't a lot that you can do, but what about at least getting established with a doggy day care in your area in case you need to be gone for a long period of time again. Right now, Harley is only home about 6 hours by himself between the time that I go to work and my husband gets home, but my husband is going to be out of town next month and sometimes I am gone more than 12 hours at a time. I have already gotten him set up with day care in my area. I can take him to my office if I have to (like today he went to the groomer) but it is easier on the both of us if he doesn't go to work with mommy! Jeri and Harley |

YT 1000 Club Member | I'm sure it will be fine but I know how it must break your heart. I feel bad leaving Roxie for more then 3-4 hours. She's always ok and is so happy to see us when we get back. I just make sure she has plenty of food and water and treat her when I'm leaving and when I come back. I don't make a big deal of it for they have to know that sometimes this is just the way it is. Doesn't mean I still don't feel bad though. Since your new to the area I'd be very careful who you trust right away. A daycare would be better then someone like a dogwalker you've just met. Unless you have had good references about the dogwalker. You just never know. Not trying to scare you but someplace on here I read of a woman who was just moving and had her neighbor watch her furbaby. When she went to get the pup it was gone. I'm sure someone on here might remember that post. Anyway good luck and I'm sure all will be fine if you leave your baby home. |
