| Double microchip question I just took Murfee in to have him microchipped with the AVID pet chip...this is what all of my pets have had so far. However, my girls were chipped before I got them with a different chip and I don't like it. I had them scanned at our vet and the scanner said a chip was found but didn't give the number so they had no access to owner information. So, I've been thinking about having my girls chipped a second time with the AVID pet chip through my vet. Has anyone had this done and if so has it caused any problems or confusion? | ive never had to have 2 chips put in.. but i think as long as the scanner can pull up the info from the new one without being confused by the old one i wouldnt see a problem.. whatd the vet have to say about it?

| I would go with my vet's advice on this one.

| I asked the vet and they said they had never heard of it causing any problems. I am most likely going to have them rechipped but I wanted to see if anyone had actually had it done and if they had any problems. I just want security in knowing they can find me if one of my dogs should get seperated from me no matter where I am at the time. |

| The AVID chip is its own beastie. You can't read an AVID chip with another scanner, and an AVID scanner won't read other chips. The AVID chip works on a different radio frequency from all the others. So here's the conundrum: If you chip with Home Again or any of the others, the chip can be read with one, common scanner. If you chip with AVID, the chip can only be read with an AVID scanner. So if something happens to your pet and they don't have an AVID scanner, it's as good as not having them chipped at all. When my pups were chipped, I went with Home Again: I want them to be readily identified. Scanners are expensive; most places are grateful for a *working* scanner, let alone one of each type. Also, scanners are expensive. So when faced with the prospect of purchasing a scanner that will do multiple types of chips or one that is proprietary and only reads a single chip, which one would you spend your money on? Just something to think about ... |

| So, who does the Home Again chip? So far the only ones I've found in our area are the AVID and the one Banfield uses. |

| Home Again is the most popular in this area (for reasons previously mentioned). Here is their website: HomeAgain On the lower right column, there is a search function. Put in your zip and it will tell you who does it in your area. It will also give you all sorts of information on chipping. |

| Thank you...according to their locator the closest vet to me that uses Home Again is about 22 miles. All of the vets in this area use AVID so if that's the way it seems to go then I guess it's just a crap shoot as to which scanner you would get if you travelled or were away from home and something happened. Maybe I should just use the old fashioned way of identification...a good break away collar with ID info on it...and hope they didn't get caught on anything that would make the collar come off! |

| Well, if you could find the numbers on their current chips, you could re-register and you'd be covered for all contingencies, too. If either chip was read, they'd all lead back to you. |

| They are all properly chipped and registered with the chip company and my vet including pictures of each of them, I have the extra stickers with their numbers on them in their files and also the little tag you put on their collar. However, mine don't wear collars for safety reasons, they are inside or in our yard unless we go for a walk or a ride in the car so there is no need for a full time collar. I will put their tags on their harnesses just in case and they do wear them when we travel. It's just too bad that there can't be a universal scanner or universal chip so every pet owner can have peace of mind no matter what brand of chip was used. |

| The microchips are as large as a grain of rice and no bigger. So I wouldnt see a problem putting two chips in the only thing that i would question is if your dog did become lost and someone scanned the other chip found the other chip and no number and not the one that you put in what would happen then. You know? Did you ask if there is anyway they can take the old chip out?

My girls are already chipped and I have their chip numbers and they are registered to me so that's not the problem. I just want to make sure the scanner can read their chip if something should happen so having them re-chipped with one of the 2 most popular chips would give me a little more security. | |
