If you chip with AVID, the chip can only be read with an AVID scanner. So if something happens to your pet and they don't have an AVID scanner, it's as good as not having them chipped at all.

When my pups were chipped, I went with Home Again: I want them to be readily identified. Scanners are expensive; most places are grateful for a *working* scanner, let alone one of each type. Also, scanners are expensive. So when faced with the prospect of purchasing a scanner that will do multiple types of chips or one that is proprietary and only reads a single chip, which one would you spend your money on?

Just something to think about ...
Most all vets have a scanner that reads both - I do myself and it was not so cost prohibitive that a vet would not have one - Take your girls to the local humane shelter - they almost always have the scanner that reads both.
