| ![]() Just keep an eye on things. I have a border collie and a yorkie. But yorkies think they are bigger then they are. Mine will go after any size dog I call her my little "tuff muffin"

| ![]() Oh you made the right choice...believe me! I have a 1 1/2 year old Golden and a 13 1/2 week old Yorkie. My first week I had the same thoughts. It does take a lot of extra attention, but they are already buddies. My Golden is SO good with him. They actually play tug o war! You will be amazed at how gentle, kind, and soft mouthed your Golden will be around your little one. I am constantly watching them and they are never left alone, but they play so well. I made sure to give positive reinforcement during gentle play with "Good Gentle, Kayden'. Now if he is getting excited I say 'Gentle' and he will calm down. Good luck! |

| ![]() Welcome, you'd like it here. About your new yorkie, socializing with the big dog in your house, I must say be very carefully. It is not just the size; it is also the age difference A puppy will always want to play. On the other hand, your other dog might not want to be bottered, or will not always be in a playful mood. Please watch closely. I had to rehome a dog because of fights. |

| ![]() It can work as long as the larger one hasn't shown any aggression and they are getting along .....I would never leave them unattended but the yourkie needs to get a bit older and bigger. If the golden ret. would accidentally step on the yorkie or lay on him it could be very bad....I had a lab and she seemed to sense how small they where so she would adjust her strength when she played with them so it was gentler....it took a while....this is my yorkies, Jack and Jake playing with the lab lucky....

| ![]() Our 90 pound Golden Is GREAT with all 3 of our yorkies. She Plays really well with them all. They seem to know that they are bigger. I would just watch and just say gentle if they get a little rough. here is just one of many pictures we have... ![]() |

| ![]() My golden was the apple of Alphy's eye. She was extremely gentle with him and played all the time. She would paw him but gently and mouth him to hold him down but never hurt him. He's about 10lbs and was 8 or 9 months old when I got him. She was a stray that we adopted and I believe she had been a mother at some point which might be why she was so gentle with him. Being 11 weeks your yorkie is a bit smaller then my Alphy but I'm sure if you keep an eye on them you won't have any issues at all. My opinion that Golden's as a general rule are extremely friendly and gentle.

| ![]() [quote=KathyRad62;2202186]My first Yorkie was a little over 2 lbs. and came into our household that already had a 2 yr. old Samoyed that weighed 60 lbs. Gidget (the Yorkie) ended up being the boss and her favorite sleeping place during the day was to hop up, snuggle in and sleep atop Jingle Bells our Samoyed. I found an old photo of Jingles with Gidget on top of her. I thought I had lost this photo. Thought I would share. Sorry it's a little dark |

| ![]() Welcome to yt...and yes you will find a lot of information on here.. and with seeing so many others with yorkies and larger dogs.. I am sure you will be find..BUT like many said be watchful... teach your bigger dog to be gentle.. and you have older children that need to be taught as well that these yorkies are fragile.. and an emergency surgery can not only be costly.. but could be very heartbreaking at the same time.. Good luck... anne |

YT 1000 Club Member | ![]() We have a husky and another dog that is half husky half lab. One is 6 months old and weighs 55 pounds... the other is about 35 lbs.and 3 years old. My yorkie is almost 5 lbs. The big dogs are pretty much outside and not in much. The yorkie plays with them some but I keep an eye. When it was just the husky and the yorkie they played all of the time. But when the other one came it just gets too rough. I don't have to do much because the yorkie already keeps distance on her own. She's pretty fast and most of the time she just plays referee with them when they are playing rough. She runs around them barking and has gotten pretty darn quick at jumping out of the way. Yorkies are alot tougher then some want to admit and can hold their own pretty well. So much so they can get themselves into trouble. I'd just always keep an eye on them because you never know. Doesn't mean you can't have both though. I also have a friend who has a golden and a pom and hasn't ever had any problems. Hope this helps some....you can do both with a watchful eye. |

| ![]() Our three dogs are together all the time. Our OESD is about 40kg(not sure in pounds approx 100lb I think) and our staff is 17kg(40/50lb?) Mika is just over 8lb. When we first brought her home she was 3lb and we never left them unsupervized then but now they are great together infact they are super gentle with Mika. Mika bites their ankles and tails and they just stand there and let her! ![]() ![]()

| ![]() Well, trust me, it all works out unless they really dislike each other. I have a 100 pound rottweiler, a mean male Cairn Terrier and two yorkies. All of them get along in their own way. The mean Cairn ignores everyone and goes about his business and if anyone gets in his way they are growled at in a way that puts even the rottie runing for the other side of the room or he just goes into his crate and hides until he is in a better mood. The rottie has mental problems I swear! She believes she is the mother of the yorkies, the guinea pigs, the cat and the mice that I feed the snakes. She babies and plays with everyone and truely believes she is not any bigger than a yorkie. I have to remind her at times that she is HUGE when she tries ti hide under the couch or go under there to play with the yorkies and moves it across the floor! The yorkies learn real fast to stay out of her way when she goes to sit down. Other then her sitting, we have had no problems. One of their biggest games is to hide their heads inher mouth like lion tamers do with lions. It is the weirdest thing I have ever seen. It used to freak me out until I saw it was like a dare game they all play and no one was getting hurt. They all sleep together and play together but i do need to watch outside when the rottie has free run like that because she can go crazy and run them over. I usually take the little ones in if an ball is involved because she just loses her mind too much. All feeding is done in crates to prevent any snapping from dish wanders. Treats are only given when dogs line up in a sitting row so they know they have to stay still and EVERYONE is working. They are like little kids, "fair is fair." It's pretty funny. Big scarey satan dogs crying to play with fluffy girlie yorkies. Just goes to show how wrong stereotyping is. Last edited by meli; 08-27-2008 at 05:28 PM. |
