| X-pens and time duration So I have Charlie placed in a x-pen with his crate, bed, food/water, some toys and piddle pads. He stays there the whole day except when he sleeps in the crate. I play with him from outside the pen, and sometimes will open the little door and play with him, but never let him roam around the house? I'm under the impression this is what you do until your puppy becomes older? Or is it bad to have in just be in the x-pen, and not running around the house. I do play with him enough, and since he just finished his vaccination I will be walking him from now on. Advice appreciated!! |

| Good question... I did not use an Xpen with Lucy but plan on getting one for my new baby soon! With Lucy I was home all day for the first couple weeks and played with her in the living room and did not let her roam. I always had my eye on her and then put her in the crate for naps and bed time. I think you should be getting your pup out for cuddling and gentle play as long as you don't let him "roam".

| How is Charlie doing with the piddle pads? I could never get Lucy to use them but would really like my new puppy to use them in addition to going outside when the time comes.

| I definitely think it's a good thing for him to be in the x-pen until he's much older & can hold his pee for longer. I keep Edward in the x-pen for about two hours at a time (when my daughter is awake & walking around), & he sleeps with me in my bed. He can hold his pee for a long time now (he's five months old) & he always pees on the puppy pads now, so I feel comfortable having him roam around the house. Before though, I would always keep him in there all day & all night (of course I took him out to play with him & such). I think about a month ago I finally trusted him to roam around, & he hasn't had an accident yet

| I would wait until he is older to give him free roam of the house, but taking him out occasionally when you are watching him is okay. Puppies have small bladders so they need to potty more frequently. As he starts to hold his bladder longer and longer he will eventually learn to hold it until he is outside. (Which is always nice. Hehe...) Good luck in your potty training adventure. We are bring Suri home soon and will be in the same boat.
