Good question...
I did not use an Xpen with Lucy but plan on getting one for my new baby soon!
With Lucy I was home all day for the first couple weeks and played with her in the living room and did not let her roam. I always had my eye on her and then put her in the crate for naps and bed time.
I think you should be getting your pup out for cuddling and gentle play as long as you don't let him "roam".
