| Sadie Update I did not get much feedback when I posted about Sadie's health situation a few days ago, but thought I would post an update in hopes that it may help others. Just as I thought, the red spot on her back was a hot spot. I applied Neosporin on it, and the redness disappeared by the next day, but she had bit the hair off around the spot. The vet said they do not know what causes hot spots. She has an allergy to something, and the vet was not sure what it is. I just had new carpet put in my home three weeks ago, so maybe she is allergic to that. I sure hope not. The vet told me to get her some grape flavored Benedryl (Childrens that is), and give her 1/8th to 1/4th of a pill every 8 to 10 hours. After one day she is not scratching hardly at all. For awhile there it was pretty bad. She also gave me some type of rinse to put on her after I shampoo her. I am glad that it is not something worse, and that I did not need to leave her overnight. | Hi Kate! Sorry, I didn't see your other post due to not being on much lately ... Long story, but mine & Toto's 2 week visit to our home in AL has been extended to two months instead! [family health problems] I can't keep up with YT since it has grown so large! Your post was a flashback to about a year or so ago for us. Toto began doing the same thing and was absolutely pulling "wads" of her hair out! The only thing different in her life was the new carpet we had installed in our home in AL! Dr. Lucy said that it had to be an allergy to the carpet ... she gave her antihistimine and a rinse for her hair called "Repair". It cleared it up in a matter of a few days! We did have to clean the new carpet which was much better than having it taken out, which was our first impulse! Recently I began having big matting problems with Toto's hair and was so desperate I was planning to have her "show coat" cut down to a puppy cut! I have tried every product that has been recommended on the forum! I remembered one of Dr. Lucy's techs saying that "Repair" was the best conditioner she had ever seen and that you could practically leave it in without rinsing! I tried it last month after we got home and I am absolutely amazed! Her coat is sooo easy to brush now that I have decided to leave it full length and Toto loves being brushed again!!!

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Thanks for the post, Kate. I will file it away for future reference, that's for sure. The Benedryl sounds like it worked great.

| Hi Kate, I missed the post too I guess. If you ever feel a post needs attention don't hesitate to bump it. There's sooo much going on here that sometimes things get overlooked. Also, don't be shy about PMing a member to ask a question. Usually there's someone who can point you in the right direction. About your carpet, I agree with Bettyeanne. Carpeting has chemicals that are emitted that you may not notice but your dog may be sensitive to, especially if it was scotchguarded. I'd try having it professionally cleaned. If it is the carpet, I think I'd also find a place for your dog to rest that is off the carpet. Some people don't allow their pets on the furniture but a compromise would be a throw that the pet can be trained to lay on beside you on the couch. Our babies are so close to the ground. It's hard for them to avoid things in the house that could cause sensitivities. Another suggestion would be to get Sadie a dog bed that she can rest in. But if she's like Bo, she probably wants to be right beside you. I've got a Schnauzer that has had serious sensitivity problems for years. So I know how frustrating it can be. Good luck. Maybe it was just an isolated thing. I'm glad she's feeling better. Let us know how things go.

| Where do you get this Repair conditioner? What is it used for? Can you only get it from the vet and is it a regular conditioner for the hair? Thanks for any info |

| spot You did not get much feedback because it is a difficult problem that puzzles vets I am sure. Tea Tree oil is great for hot spots and the same type shampoo is also good for allergic skin. If the hair pore isn't damaged the hair will grow back soon. Good luck |

| Hi Kate, I also find I have trouble reading all the posts on here. I usually only really get to read a few posts a day. I feel bad for not responding your post. A lot of dogs get hot spots. My dog, Cailee, is one of them. She has had all sorts of allergies. I have also given her Benadryl and it does work. You did the right thing and I'm glad Sadie is feeling better. I also agree with YorkieRose. Cailee's old groomer used Tea Tree Oil shampoo on her and it did miracles to her coat. I still will only use shampoos that have Tea Tree Oil in them on her fur.

| Kate - I feel terrible for not even seeing your post. But I am glad that you re-posted this for everyone to get a second chance at looking at. I have never even heard of a "hotspot" before. Thanks for posting this and the remedy that you vet advised. I'm sure it will help people in the future, and that's what it's all about - prevention to help our babies live healthier. Thanks-a-bunch!

| Hi bettyanne: Don't feel bad about replying. I think most newsgroups are slower during the busy summer months. I just moved three weeks ago, after weeks of packing and have not been here awhile either. I pray your family gets to feeling better, and that you are taking good care of you! I printed out your email and will ask my Vet about Repair, if this does not help. I just got the bottle of Leave-On Lotion that my vet gave me and it is called, "Virbac ResiHIST. I need to read up on it on the internet, but she told me not to use conditioner when I bathe her, and to just use ResiHIST. I have not used it yet, as I just bathed her two weeks ago, and the vet said not to bathe her that often. Thanks for replying, Kate Quote:

| Yes, so far it is working, but she does start scratching after the 8 - 10 hours when the Benedryl is starting to wear off. I need to call the Vet Friday, because although I know this is working, I am wondering how safe it is to use it for a long period of time. She is so little, so this is a concern. Kate Quote:

Toto developed a little congestion and I rushed her down to Dr. Lucy yesterday afternoon ... turned out the congestion I thought I heard in her little chest was actually coming from her little sinus! She gave her meds and we hope this clears it up. That's when I asked Dr. Lucy about the "Repair" rinse ... she looked on Toto's record and saw where she gave her the "Relief" rinse last year .... duhhhh!! She said she didn't think it was available over the counter and would check on it. Thanks! My family's health is improving ... daughter-in-love is recovering from her surgery and looks like Toto and I will be able to fly back to Colorado on the 28th!! I hope little Sadie is better and that the diagnosis was correct. If it turns out to be your new carpet that will be a pain to deal with. We bought Berber and I never dreamed there would be anything in it that Toto would be allergic to but apparantly the cleaning removed it. Let us know how Sadie is doing. Tell her Toto sends her sweet little puppy kisses!

| I'm so sorry to here about your little one. I have two dogs a yorkie and a great dane and when our great dane was about 6mo. she got a hot spot as they call it on her belly and the vet did a bunch of test(witch I hated putting her thru) but they said it was from the pet dander from a cat that was in the carpet from the people before. So you may have stired up something from the old carpet and she will be find now. we changed the carpet and things are great now |

| Thanks for your post, and everyone else if I missed saying "Thank You". I just moved so things are hectic right now. I got Sadie a bed a few months ago, and you are right, she wants right next to me. She is doing well on the Benedryl, but the second it starts to wear off she itches. I don't want to medicate her forever, but the vet thinks once fall comes, she may kick this. I do put blankets, pillows and throws down for her, and try to keep her off of the carpet as much as possible. I just have a sneaky feeling that it is the carpet, but the vet was not sure. Thanks again. Kate Quote:
