Senior Yorkie Talker | The first groom Hi I was wondering how old my little Gwen should be before her hair is cut down? I've read 6 months but that puts it at October and it's pretty cold here in Missouri by then.....her hair is about 2 inches long on her back now and she is 13 weeks old. Should I wait until it warms up after she is over 6 months (which might not be until March or April) or should I have it done in like mid-August or mid-September so she can grow some hair back before it gets cold?? I'm new to the Yorkie and their particular coat requirements, plus I'm worried if I wait until October she'll catch a chill even though she'll be in clothes. Any advice would be greatly appreciated by myself and Chilly Gwenny the Yorkie lol. Thanks

| I would wait until it gets warmer. Yorkies dont handle being very cold or very hot. I would just try to brush her to keep her hair from tangling. At that age a good brushing 1-2x a week should do, but as it gets longer you will have to brush more to keep her coat in good condition. Fisher enjoys being groomed everyday. I bought a little brush and brush him until he is snoring lol To me their coats are so much more beautiful longer. Fishers isnt as long as it will get, but when it does reach its full length I will prob. trim it a littler for better control

| Why? WHY? What do you mean by "Cut Down"? I personally don't cut or trim any of mine (3 Yorkie's) except for their standard Grooming; Sanitary shave(their private parts), trim between their toes and around their feet, shave and tip their ears. My 2 females (Mother & daughter) have their bangs trimmed b/c they don't like wearing a Topknot. Yorkie's hair/coat are not like other dog breeds, they have NO under coat their hair protects them from the Sun & Cold it's not like they are Alaskan Malamute's shaved down for the Summer? Is that what you mean?Just curious b/c I have never heard of that for Yorkie's? |

| I haven't done the first professional groom as yet as I am letting the baby hair grow out. I will only trim ears, leg, toes and butt when I do after neutering. So I plan to do first groom in at 7 - 8 months. It gets cold here in Canada too. |

| I dont think that the age matters. What matters is that they have all the needed shots. Most groomers will not groom your pup if they have not had their first sets of shot/incl. rabies And I just let Meka's hair grow out for the 1st year. The only time I shaved her was at 5/6 mo's because her hair had matted really bad.. I keep her cut very low now, only beacuse the longer coat is a lot to maintain.... Hope this helps

| It is very important not to take your puppy out or around other dogs until all the vaccines are given. The rabies shot is not typically given until at least 4 months old. A young puppy could get ill quickly from being exposed to other dogs. You could trim your puppy if you need to, but, not shave her , or anything totally dramatic.

| Took my 5 month old Pepper to the groomer's last week. Sanitary cut, trimmed hair out of his eyes, trim between the toes, ears shaved and tipped. I like his puppy coat, in no hurry to lose it.

| I just had Rommie cut for the first time. He hated it!! He kept cutting his eyes at me. I just hope that his long coat grows back by the winter. I loved his topknot! |

| Me Too? I have NEVER heard of this either? From what I know, their "Adult" coat will grow in, regardless if you shave their "Puppy" coat or not? Most of the time it's an "Accident" and not intentional. In my case anyway! The hair will fall out on it's own and change Naturally it is not common practice to shave it all off. Any one else? I'm curious too! |
