| please hug your furkids This isn't about a Yorkie so if it's wrong I apologize in advance. I just left the animal er with my oldest daughter-we're leaving without an important member of her crew, her 1 1/2 yo Blue Heeler named C.D. Yesterday I took him out to his outside run as usual, filled his water bucket while he took care of business. Since it's been so hot here lately I've been using my kitchen timer to make sure that we're not out too long-usual time is 15 min., yesterday I brought C.D. in early-right at 10 min,as soon as he was finished drinking & peeing because we had an ozone adv. in effect. Jenn came in from work shortly afterwards and was on her way in to get C.D. to go out again when we heard a thunk and crashing sound, we ran in and C.D. had collapsed and thrown up. I don't know what his body temp was but I knew that he was too hot so youngest daughter ran and got a bowl of water and a rag and we started wiping his face, ears, armpits & paws down to try and cool him off. We then took off to the er (with Jenn and Heather misting him with water all the way) where he was given one bag of fluids and valium for seizures. His temp when we arrived was 105, but was dropping -they said from us working on him on the way. During his admission he had a seizure but then no more until about 7 this A.M. when he started having continuous seizures. We were able to get there by 7:20 and when we walked in we knew that he couldn't continue like this so Jenn made the decision to let him go. We stayed with him the whole time telling him what a good boy he was and how much we loved him. I'm not looking for pity, but if you can see anything that we could have handled differently please tell me. young appearently healthy dog kept inside in A.C. except for bathroom trips and to stretch his legs a little while outside always had free access to clean, cool water one of us was always with him while outside because of behavior issues-so he was never "just let out" during this heat, he was put into his run under a shade tree with a sun-shade over it and not let have full run of the yard always had access to clean, cool water inside the house was eating, drinking and behaving normally all day The er vet seems to think that maybe C.D. had a heart defect that wouldn't show during his normal check-up. As I said I don't want pity, I want to know if I missed something and I don't want anyone else to go through what our family is right now. I miss my Grandfurkid so much. Thanks for letting me ramble and for any answers. Rhonda,Peanut,Izzy,Cricket & Honey |

Living My Yorkie Dream Donating Member | OMG, I am so sorry for your unexpected loss, making it even harder to bear if that's possible. It seems to me that you did nothing wrong in his care with the heat and everything right before, during, and getting him to the vet. From what you described, I would think that it was something other than the heat that caused him to collapse. I will give my furbabies an extra hug today, and again, I am so sorry for your familys' loss.....

| Oh! I am so sorry. I know someone that had a blue heeler until they lost it due to old age and that was the sweetest doggie. He grinned at everyone. My heart goes out to all of you. I agree that there was probably something else wrong, but that doesn't make it any easier.

| First of all,I think you did NOTHING wrong, so I can't answer you question with what happened.. I can say this on a personal level you do not want pity, but how about just some words of comfort... You didn't do anything wrong, look how quickly you acted, how careful you were to time it,how careful you were to keep everything in order for him and protect him. How many fur grandmas do not do this? Look how you acted, and took him straight away to the vet with out any thought and kept him cool on the way.. and look what this child that you raised did... she let him go rather then let him suffer.... props to each of you, and I'm so sorry this happened to you and hope for you and your family brighter days.

| Oh I am so sorry this happened to you and your daughters. What a terrible tragic thing to have to go thru. The heat is bad here this time of year, and you took every precaution you could to ensure C.D. was safe. There is just no rhyme or reason as to why these things sometimes happen. Sometimes they just do. It's just so heart wrenching when it happens this way. Please take time to mourn your loss, but then remember and keep close all the special memories you have of C.D. And don't be surprised if one of your other doggies doesn't occasionally display a very "C.D." type behavior. I've noticed it time and time again, that the ones still with us sometimes do something that will immediately be recognized as something the one gone would have done. It's kind of like they are telling me their still around and watching over us. I always say hi and that I still love and miss them. Hugs to you and your family.

| I am so sorry for your loss. I know you must feel horrible but sounds like to me you did all you could do. The heat here is terrible. I worry about mine standing at the gate and barking and coming in so hot. Kayla is the worse. She will bark for hrs. After reading this I am going to limit their stay outside, even though they never stay out long, but this is a good lesson for everyone that lives in a place as hot as Texas. Again, I am so sorry. |

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | I'm so sorry for your loss, it's hard not to question everything after the fact. But know you did everything you could as soon as possible and that's all that can be expected. |
