please hug your furkids This isn't about a Yorkie so if it's wrong I apologize in advance. I just left the animal er with my oldest daughter-we're leaving without an important member of her crew, her 1 1/2 yo Blue Heeler named C.D.
Yesterday I took him out to his outside run as usual, filled his water bucket while he took care of business. Since it's been so hot here lately I've been using my kitchen timer to make sure that we're not out too long-usual time is 15 min., yesterday I brought C.D. in early-right at 10 min,as soon as he was finished drinking & peeing because we had an ozone adv. in effect.
Jenn came in from work shortly afterwards and was on her way in to get C.D. to go out again when we heard a thunk and crashing sound, we ran in and C.D. had collapsed and thrown up. I don't know what his body temp was but I knew that he was too hot so youngest daughter ran and got a bowl of water and a rag and we started wiping his face, ears, armpits & paws down to try and cool him off. We then took off to the er (with Jenn and Heather misting him with water all the way) where he was given one bag of fluids and valium for seizures. His temp when we arrived was 105, but was dropping -they said from us working on him on the way. During his admission he had a seizure but then no more until about 7 this A.M.
when he started having continuous seizures. We were able to get there by 7:20 and when we walked in we knew that he couldn't continue like this so Jenn made the decision to let him go. We stayed with him the whole time telling him what a good boy he was and how much we loved him.
I'm not looking for pity, but if you can see anything that we could have handled differently please tell me.
young appearently healthy dog
kept inside in A.C. except for bathroom trips and to stretch his legs a little
while outside always had free access to clean, cool water
one of us was always with him while outside because of behavior issues-so he was never "just let out"
during this heat, he was put into his run under a shade tree with a sun-shade over it and not let have full run of the yard
always had access to clean, cool water inside the house
was eating, drinking and behaving normally all day
The er vet seems to think that maybe C.D. had a heart defect that wouldn't show during his normal check-up.
As I said I don't want pity, I want to know if I missed something and I don't want anyone else to go through what
our family is right now. I miss my Grandfurkid so much. Thanks for letting me ramble and for any answers.
