| sophie wears a collar and tag at all times, on this island many animals go missing never to be seen again, she is also microchipped which is a standard requirement out here. but not many people would be othered to take them to a vet i doubt. Ihave had 2 dogs before and never had problems with collars, kinnys has had one on fro the day we got her and she does nt bother with it at all !! Accidents will happen just take precautions and adjust ur collar from time to time. |

| Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | What a great, helpful post. Thanks. There have been several occasions where I'll see a wandering dog. The first thing I do is check for tags. If they have tags and a number, I call immediately. If they don't, sometimes I just let them wander and hope they'll make their way home safely. For that reason, my guys are tagged. I want to know sooner rather than later.

| Both my babies have collars and tags. Katie is microchiped too, as will Suzi be when she's a little older. Hugs Shirl x x

| Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | My guys are chipped and they wear collars/tags AT ALL TIMES. Fitting a collar for a small dog is *much* different than for large dog - but it can be done safely. I can't tell you HOW many times in my area I've heard people say "WHAT IS A MICROCHIP?"... ...That's all I need to hear to know I need to have my guys tagged at all times. I've used collars/tags for i.d. purposes for my pets for 35 years - and I've never had a single issue.

| Donating YT 2000 Club Member | I totally agree with always wearing a tag! We had to keep a yorkie (years ago) until a Monday when we could get the Rabies Tag # checked! Good Post!

| My babies used to chew their collars too, but they are 7 months old and haven't done it for at least 3 months. I have our number on both their tags. They do grow out of chewing on them. I'm so glad everything turned out okay. |

| Tetley wears a simple tag on his collar at all times that just has his name and our phone number. All his other tags (rabies, city license, etc) are on his harness. He doesn't even notice his collar so I'm not worried about him messing with it. When he was a puppy he would try to bite the tag, but that's partly my fault because it had some bling on it and I think the sparkle of it caught his attention. Now he has a small, plain pewter tag and never tries to bite it. I think people who find a dog with absolutely no identification with be less likely to try to return the dog. Just my opinion. |

K - what type of collar is safe to wear then? I have many harnesses and only one collar when Izz was a baby but after reading this I might have to get her a new one but want to make sure to get the correct one. Thanks so much OP for posting this - a big eye opener for those of us who do not use collars. Izzy is microchipped though.

| I agree with the OP in that the Microchip should be thought of as your backup/second line of defense. Many people will not know to check it and there is also the problem of no universal standard for microchip scanners. I've currently got a collar on Gir with a tag. I'm also going to put one on his harness (that he wears in addition to his collar when out and about). I'll be getting him microchipped soon. Afterwards, I'll start using a breakaway collar to hold his tags for his safety on getting it caught on something. I know at least where I live.. by law you must have county rabies tags on your dog. I've heard of them also sending people to check at dog parks. |

| Mine wear simple nylon collars with tags. Their tags are engraved with our phone number, REWARD, MICROCHIPPED, and NEEDS MEDS. Loki does need meds daily, but the idea of putting it on there is that someone would read it and hopefully find you quickly and not be as tempted to keep your dog.
