THIS is why I believe in dog tags I have always been a strong proponent of putting tags with name, phone info on them. I don't think that microchips (which my dogs also have) are a substitute for a dog tag. Friday night was a good example why. I had a party at my house on Friday, with lots of people coming and going. I had the girls gated off, but somehow, my Westie, Breezy, managed to escape anyway. After my last guest left at midnight, my cell phone rang. It was from a young man 4 houses down who said "I have your dog!" I DID NOT EVEN KNOW BREEZY WAS MISSING at that point! I don't think she had been gone for more than 10 minutes when this young man found her. Keep in mind that if I were depending on the microchip for identification, he would probably not have gone to get her scanned until Monday (if at all), and I would have been frantic for 3 days. I know many of you say that your little ones chew on their collars or tags. My dogs did too. But that is a puppy thing that they will get over very quickly. I am a big believer in wearing dog tags at all times. Please consider it if your dogs are now tagless. It could prevent a lot of heartache. |
I know many people don't like collars here, but mine all have collars and tags. Personally I've always thought...having the info readily accessible would be easier and faster for someone to return your dog. I'm glad an honest soul found your Breezy.... |
 ... oh what a big scare ... glad everything worked out ok ...... |
I ordered Bruno a tag the day we got him. I am now looking for the perfect "princess" tag for Baylee. I for one agree, you can not depend on just the microchipping to bring your babies home |
I'm one of those people that have the tags, but never have it on him:(. He keeps playing with it. I think I need to start leaving on him all the time. I would have freaked:eek: if that happened to me. |
I think collars are a good idea for this reason. Good thing you have one with a tag! I think most people just don't like them for using a leash? Glad you got your little one back safe and sound. :animal-pa |
thanks for the reminder going to get suki one today |
Glad you found breezy so quickly. I agree with wearing a collar for identification purposes. Mine two dogs and cat all have a collar and id tag on at all times. |
I am a number 1 fan of dog tags. My dogs are microchipped but still.... They need an identification for easy find.. some people don't know about microchip... atleast our neighborhood. ... My Zoey chews on it everytime but she got tired of it..... |
Franklin and Maggie wear tags when we go out or when they could possibly slip out the door (ie. like a party). I completely agree! Thanks for the reminder! They have never chewed on their collars/tags and because they are ALWAYS with me when they have the collar on, it doesn't pose a safety concern. |
I agree that dog tags are important - but we had a collar scare when Bailey was younger (she got her mouth caught in the collar). That's an episode that I don't want repeated. I will never use a buckle collar - only the snap kind for easy release are used in this house now. Also, collars are not to be used in the ex-pen for safety purposes. So, Bailey doesn't wear a collar unless supervised. Kinda defeats the purpose, huh? |
If you are worried about your pup chewing on their tag you can buy one that is placed on the collar. You can get them online. :) |
Thank goodness it all worked Out. All mine have both tags and chips... I am a Firm believer also. |
All three of my dogs wear collars with 3 tags on it. 1) Dog's name and phone number. 2)Rabies tag which has the vet's name and number. 3) Microchip tag with microchip number and phone number. Even my cat has a tag with her name and phone number on it and she is an outside cat! I usually walk my dogs with a harness but the collars are still worn. When Harley (6mths) tries to chew on Tessa's(10mths) I just give a firm NO and he stops. Tags are the first line of defensive in reuniting pet and owner!:) |
