I agree with the OP in that the Microchip should be thought of as your backup/second line of defense. Many people will not know to check it and there is also the problem of no universal standard for microchip scanners.
I've currently got a collar on Gir with a tag. I'm also going to put one on his harness (that he wears in addition to his collar when out and about).
I'll be getting him microchipped soon. Afterwards, I'll start using a breakaway collar to hold his tags for his safety on getting it caught on something.
I know at least where I live.. by law you must have county rabies tags on your dog. I've heard of them also sending people to check at dog parks. |
