| 1 year old yorkie vs Puppy... Many of you know about my search for Esme's playmate. You may have also read about my finding a dog on puppyfind. Here is the link on that thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12930 Anyhow, I was skeptical because the dog was purchased from a breeder in Puerto Rico. Then that family sold it to this lady and now this lady is selling it because she says her first dog, a pug, doesn't like the yorkie. I had asked the lady for pictures a few weeks ago, and she said she only had the one on the advertisement. I guess she was able to get some more, because she sent them to me last night. The dog looks real cute from the pictures and it broke my heart because this poor baby really deserves her forever home. On the OTHER hand, I am worried about bringing her into my home. Seeing as she is not a brand new puppy, CAN SHE BE FULLY TRAINED at this point in her life??? The lady said she is still not fully potty trained. My other issue is that Esme is 9 months old, this dog is 12 months old. Esme loves EVERYONE. When we see other dogs, Esme wants to play, when we took care of my friends chi for a week Esme was in heaven... BUT, is it better for her new playmate to be a puppy or would she do okay if I bring a dog her age (I figure they won't know who is older) into the picture??? These may seem like weird or silly concerns, but Esme is has been the perfect yorkie and I just don't want to ruin a good thing. I DO want her to have a playmate but I want to make sure the dog we get fits into our family. Please give me advice and opinions! Mari

| And I have of course been thinking about the pros and cons of an older dog vs. a puppy.

| A one year old is still a puppy. Training her may take a little longer than with a new puppy. I've adult yorkie rescues and have been able to train them without any real problems. It just takes time and patience. My biggest concern here would be the fact that this dog is from Puerto Rico. There have been a number of programs on TV about the yorkies imported from south america, by and large they are not healthy dogs. For that reason alone I'd say no thanks unless you are prepared for a lifetime of vet bills. It sounds as if your existing dog loves to play and another dog of any age will probably make her a happy camper. Just be sure that the dog you are buying is healthy. |

| I would have to say get a puppy that way Esme and the puppy can bond easier. I once made a mistake and brought an adult home and she hated my chihuahua attacked her twice and I found her a home after that. Sometimes when they are older and haven't had a stable home they will fight for your attention and I don't think you would want that to happen. when I brought Adina home my chihuahua wouldn't like her but she never has attacked her maybe the fact that she was a baby had something to do with it and now that Adina is older Chiquita will try to play with her but Adina is too fast for her. Same when I got Whisper Adina didn't attack her but would just ignore her for about 2 weeks now they are best buds. I think you should stick to a puppy maybe under 6 months old because at 1 year old some are not as playful and under 6 months they almost are all playful. Smiles, Myra |

| Baxter was 1 1/2 when I got Chloe (she was a puppy when I got her). Baxter was at the point where he plays and everything, but not quite like a puppy. He's settled down a little. Had I thought about it before, I would have gotten them close together. She just drives him nuts because she is still a puppy. She picks on him CONSTANTLY and it drives my poor baby crazy. And he is VERY jealous of her. He loves her and when she wimpers or something, he is RIGHT there (she HATES getting a bath and Baxter knows this. He will stand AT the bathroon door until she comes out). They are little sweeties and I love them both. I just think it would have been a little easier on Baxter if they were closer in age.
