| Home Alone Hello everyone, I posted a thread a few weeks ago concerned about leaving my Rocky at home alone while I went back to the office full-time. Everyone was so helpful and comforting - I really appreciated that!! I have an update with another question/concern which I'd love to hear your opinions on ... When we leave for work we put him in a play pen with a potty pad, food, water, toys, and his bed. He has thus far been very lucky to have people visit him and take him away for fun. Yesterday was his first day home alone and he did very well from what I could see (went potty where he should, ate, etc.). However, I just got a call from my brother who went to get him and he reported that Rocky had dumped over his water, ate all his food (by noon-ish I think) and went potty on the floor not on the potty pad. We have a larger kennel and I am not sure if I should put him back in that - if this play pen is too much room for him to move around. I don't want him to be unhappy but I don't want him to spill out water and not be able to have fresh water to drink! Any ideas? My guess is that Rocky (11 weeks yesterday) is very distraught that we left him this morning and he responds to this by bouncing around at the metal play pen crying and knocking over all that is in his way. I am still at work and feel sad for my poor little Rocky ... Any advice/suggestions/similar experiences? Thanks so much everyone ... |

| Is there some way the water bowl can be connected to a playpen the way you can attach the water bowls for a kennel?

| Puppies play hard too and get the zoomies sometimes... I used a Graco playpen for almost a year for Rusty at my work. When he bounced a little too much, I put 2 old seat cushions off a sofa in there and they became a wonderful shock absorber, not to mention not as hard on my back to bend down and play with him. He was never a climber. Leaving him alone is not good with this setup. I would really invest in an x-pen or something to get him on the floor in case he does climb. Bouncing will not be a problem on the floor too. Some pups do well in small spaces and others do not. He is still young enough to make changes... Hope this helps.

You are right - he is still young and I think he is a pretty happy guy - he'd be even happier to know it's Friday and that means we spend two whole days playing with him ... | |

| I would go for a larger pen. It seems it's to small and is bumping into everything.

| I use a water bottle that attaches to the wire of the crate. The kind both my bird and hamster would drink from (but for dogs of course). That way Chico can't knock it over and he always has fresh water. I used an x-pen when Chico was younger but the minute we would leave he would tear up the potty pads which stuck to his face, knock over his water and food bowl. I figured he would eat the dog food off the floor if he got hungry but not having water concerned me so I got the water bottle I referred to. Now Chico is in a crate while we're at work. He does get mad sometimes and will knock over his food bowl (I guess he throws a little temper tantrum haha) We've noticed that he doesn't eat his food when we're gone but when we come home from work, only then will he eat! I guess he just doesn't like dining alone . (He's a teapot so we don't worry about him eating too much as he is heathly and happy.) We too have found that Chico sleeps all day. It's sooo cute when we get home and he greets us with a big yawn and stretches like he's just woke up from the best nap ever!

| You made eed to give your puppy more space while you are gone. He is very young, and could possibly be getting bored, and have too much energy . My Suzi is always playing in her water dish, and we are home. So I am constanly refilling her water.... However i am home to do that. i think you can also buy a timed feeder that dispenses food out at times that you want to feed your puppy. Could a family member check on him more often throughout the day? Your puppy could be lonely and need human contact.
