| I am starting to dislike Baxter. A lot. I don't know what happened but all of a sudden he stopped sleeping through the night. He's 7 mos. old. We were up 3 times last night to go out and 2 times the night before. He makes it all day without going potty so I don't know why all of a sudden he has to go during the night. He sleeps with me and my husband. I have totally spoiled this dog and was so excited when he started sleeping through the night. I know it throws him off a bit with his stomach when he gets his heartworm medicine but that was Friday and this is his bladder. Tonight I am going to try to leave him in the bathroom where he stays during the day and see if I can get him back on schedule. Any other suggestions? I am really getting tired of this. |

| Huh? Well if he goes all day without going potty of course he has to go at night! He has to go some time, right? Am i missing something??? So as for what you can do, take him outside to go potty just before bed. if he wont go with just standing outside then take him on a long walk till he goes. Also, pick up his food and water a couple hours before bedtime. Hope these suggestions help.

| Well yeah Isn't this part of owning a dog you need to train your dog to go during the day taking him out every hour. (That is if you don;t work) wait did you say you leave your dog in the bathroom all day?!? |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Awe, your title upsets me, I know you're frustrated, but he probably can't help it. Can't you use a pee-pad so that he can go on his own. I hope he doesn't have a bladder infection, I don't know anything about the heartworm medicine giving problems. Hope you find a solution.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Awww, don't dislike him. I would take him out as late as possible before bedtime, but I'd also fully expect him to need to go again very early in the am...like 5:30 - 6 AM. He's small...he has a small bladder.

| I knew that title would get some responses. Trust me - Baxter is by no means mistreated. My husband says he lives better than he does. He is in a huge bathroom during the day while I work and he has puppy pads down that he never uses but they are available if he wants them. My pom was the same way. He never used the bathroom during the day. Baxter and I walk a lot in the afternoon and in the morning. I hate to take his food away at night - he free-feeds but that may be an option. I just don't know what happened to throw him off his schedule. |

| I would have the vet check him out. 'Tis possible there's a UTI or other bladder or kidney problem. Is he able to go out sufficiently of an evening before he goes to bed? They don't get up that often to potty unless there is a problem.

| I know your just frustrated, I would be as well if I woke up often during the night. I would give Baxter a nice long walk before bedtime. If he can hold his bladder during the day there is no reason he can not at night! It may becoming habit forming. Getting up I mean. If he is walked before bed and no water given after the walk then he should be able to get threw the night. I can only mention to you that my vet said do not get up at night with Buddy. This is how they learn to hold it. I am talking about a 6mo or older pup. I stopped getting up! When he would wake me I just put him on the floor. He never did anything just wanted attention is all. After a couple of nights he settled in and slept right along with me. Don't give up. You just need to find a way to get threw this phase. Play at nighttime with him too. Don't let him just sleep while your watching tv. Try and keep him active. The walk before bed is a must. Good luck, |

| I hadn't thought of a kidney problem. He is not going at all during the day so it is strange he is having to go at night. He reminds me of a baby that has mixed up day and night. I AM thrilled that he wakes me up and doesn't potty on the floor. Thanks for all the good suggestions. |

| Hey! Don't feel bad about starting to hate your dog. I love Cricket, our first yorkie who is now a year old, more than I can tell you... But when he was a puppy, there were times that he pushed me so far to the edge that I talked to my husband about giving him away. This dog, this tiny, adorable pain in the ass, did the following: Woke up several times a night, cried consistently if he didn't get his way, peed everywhere if we let him run for any amount of time, and... drumroll... LOVED to poo and roll and eat it. Ick. I'm clean. My home is clean. And Mr. Cricket was a dirtly little man. He would also wake us up all hours of the night, sometimes to go potty, sometimes just to wake up. Cricket sleeps with us--he refused to do the kennel at night, and we tried everything, literally. So this was a big issue. My first tip: Run the hell out of that sweet little furbaby when you get home from work, and don't let him sleep a lot when you're around. Keep him up, keep him alert, keep him busy. We actually got two of those razor scooters that kids play with so that we could go faster and wear out the dog faster. And it works like a charm. My second tip: Work on those potty commands. Reward with treats or "good job!" or excessive petting when the pup potties outside during the day--whatever it responds to best (Cricket's is praise and petting). If he isn't pottying during the day, he needs to learn that's the time to go. My third tip: Restrict water and food. Cricket eats at 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. with a few little treats here and there. He gets water all day, but we've learned that he always gets a big drink at 9:15. That's it. No more water. We take him out to pee at 10:30 or so, and that's the last call. He always pees then--99% of the time. He poos at 7:15 a.m. and between 5:45 and 7 p.m. That's our schedule. Cricket loves it, and we love it. Don't feel bad--just try not to beat him or kill him. The schedule has been good for us. Regular meals and regular water equal regular potty, and regular exercise plus regular potty equal SLEEP. You can do it! Training them is a real you-know-what, but you'll get there. Take your breaths, stay patient, and you'll get there!!! Also, grab some yorkie books from the library and read up on those subtle things you can do to show that you're the dominant boss (like going through all doorways before your dog). Those make a huge difference in training. You can do it!!! Last edited by mayerae23; 07-22-2008 at 12:44 PM. |

| I know I keep comparing him to the pom we had for 13 years. But this puppy is amazing in his energy. He will literally "go fetch" for a solid hour without giving out. I am wondering if I am letting him get too worked up. We had a schedule prior to this week. Hopefully we will get back on it soon. I do threaten him to be given away on a daily basis! He knows I'm lying. |

P.S. Muffin was a high energy yorkie. Kacee is more laid back, but she asks me to take her for walks all of the time.

| Aww, the poor little guy is only 7 mths old - give him a chance! I get up to take Toots out once a night and she is 4 years old. It doesn't worry me - but I can get back to sleep easily and maybe you find it difficult to do so?. When we first got her, I took her out 2 to 3 times during the night for quite a while, as she was having 'accidents' during the night. I cut down her water intake in the evening and this helps. She hardly ever has an accident now, not that it would upset me if she did. She has to go when she has to go. I do take her out last thing at night and wait until she goes. I keep reminding her to go, while I am standing there, otherwise she gets distracted by the nighttime sounds, insects, frogs etc LOL! and forgets all about going potty. I don't go inside until she does something & I always praise her like crazy when she goes. She has accidents when she is not feeling well or has an upset tummy or whatever, but this is to be expected and we need to be patient about it. Give Baxter a big kiss and hug from me and Toots. I know you are probably tired from working all day, but he is only little and still needs lots of patience while he learns to control his bladder etc. If you feel taking him on has been a mistake, as you are feel unable to cope with him as well as everything else in your life at the moment, there is no shame in admitting it and giving him to someone who is perhaps at home and has the time and patience to train him. It can't be much fun for him being in a bathroom all day anyway. You could then look for an older dog - Toots was 3 yrs old when we got her, although she was not house trained!! - that gets on with your other dog and they can spend the day together. This may well work out better all round. I hope I haven't offended you in any way, as I certainly don't mean to do so. I am not in your particular position and this is just my suggestion. Luv Franceen xx |
