| Puppy's First Hair Cut? Is it necessary to get the puppy's their first hair cut? Do you have to cut their hair? Storm is 5 months old, and his hair is getting so long, I don't want to have it cut, but is there a plus side to cutting it, that I don't know of??? |

| OMG please, if your gonna take him to a groomer please, please, please, specify to them exactly what you want done and stay there while theyre doing it. I learned the hard way and the groomer completely shaved my Cody. When I took him in he was black and tan when I picked him up I didnt recognize him at all because he was grey and tan. OMG worse experience of my life. This was in april now here we are in july and his hair has grown back but nowhere near to the length it was. I have also witnessed some horrible acts at PETCO to the poor dogs who are left to be groomed. Just be careful!!

| There are lots of people that love the short puppy cut. Its easier to manage. However I love the long hair and do feel you need to trim the hair just like woman do with the split ends to make it healthier. But you have to really know the groomer and make sure they understand what you want. Most want to cut the yorkies and the groomers I have had only 1 has known how to cut a yorkie.

| I have read of bad experiences with groomers, and I am just frightened to take Storm in. I just wanted to make sure it was not something I needed to do to promote hair growth or something of that nature. Thanks for your reply. |

| Just trim around the potty areas and pads of the feet. Also make sure that his hair isn't growing into his eyes. I've had Abby and Daisy trimmed/groomed twice. It was a complete waste of money on Abby. She's 5 months as well.

| Too Afraid.... Garrett is almost 6months, and I've been too afraid to take him to the groomers, for the very reasons stated here. His hair is getting a bit long, so I try to brush him with a slicker brush every night (you know the ones with the little pins). I trim his ears, the pads of his paws, and his underside myself. I usually use scissors, as he is very still while I'm doing it. He's good like that, as a matter of fact he generally falls asleep. Last night I got brave, and gave him an all-over trim......I just picked up small sections of hair and trimmed off the very ends. He looks pretty good to me . I think I'll hold off going to the groomers as long as I can......maybe I'll buy a set of shears and do it myself....I've been cutting my son's hair for years now, he's 11, how hard could a puppy be

| Sadie will be 12 weeks old tomorrow and her hair isnt very long at all! She doesnt even have enough yet for a little ponytail in front. As much as I want to put one there with the little hairs that she has! LOL!! Her hair seems curly and wirey to me. Do Yorkies have curly and wirey hair at 12 weeks? I did trim her ears though to help them stand up but so far thats all Ive done. |

| I think if your dog has a silk coat and it is easier to take care of it is nice to keep it long but the cottony coat is so hard on them when they are groomed and it mats so easily. My first yorkie had a cottony coat and I put her is a short puppy cut as an adult and she was so much happier. But like someone else said, be sure to explain to the groomer exactly what you want or you may be in for a big surprise.

| Hi! I am a groomer... this is my opinion: if you like your baby's hair long then leave it long, but I would go ahead and carry him to the groomer for a sanitary cut. If it makes you feel better about it to stay and watch then I would encourage you to do that 100%. It is better to get him used to the clippers now as a puppy, than to wait until he is older. A sanitary cut usually includes (at least in my shop) a bath and blow dry, teeth brushed, anal glands expressed, toe nails clipped, ear hair plucked, and shave pads of feet, tummy, around their bottom, tips of ears and, if you prefer, at the inside corner of the eye. It should take at the most 1 hour. Then if you do decide to do a puppy cut or westie cut or something like that later your baby will be used to the clippers and won't stress so much. I hope this helps!

| I have a comb that I use on him. I do have one of those brushes, but a comb seems to get through his hair better, plus he likes to bite at the brush but not the comb. I may call around tomorrow and ask some questions about the sanitary cut. I really, really don't want his hair cut, I don't think. His top hair....maybe...over an inch now, maybe 1 1/2 inches. My husband just has fits but when he is not home, I use little hair bands to put one in. I just love it! His hair is so long I cannot even see his eyes if I don't put it up. |

| I always have my puppies shaved down at around 5 or 6 months old. I like to see "what's really under there"?!? Usually it's a whole different dog!!
