Hi! I am a groomer... this is my opinion: if you like your baby's hair long then leave it long, but I would go ahead and carry him to the groomer for a sanitary cut. If it makes you feel better about it to stay and watch then I would encourage you to do that 100%. It is better to get him used to the clippers now as a puppy, than to wait until he is older. A sanitary cut usually includes (at least in my shop) a bath and blow dry, teeth brushed, anal glands expressed, toe nails clipped, ear hair plucked, and shave pads of feet, tummy, around their bottom, tips of ears and, if you prefer, at the inside corner of the eye. It should take at the most 1 hour. Then if you do decide to do a puppy cut or westie cut or something like that later your baby will be used to the clippers and won't stress so much.
