I am seriously considering purchasing another yorkie. I would like honest advice and opinions from those of you that have gone from one to two yorkies. My Derby is 8 months old and absolutely the love of my life. I of course, always have room in my heart and home for more pets. I also have a 3 yr old kitty that is Derby's best friend and brother. They cuddle and clean each other like they have been together from the start. I just want to be sure that if I get another puppy that Derby's personality won't change....does that sound dumb and paranoid? I mean he is such a momma's boy and so loving and so cuddly I just don't want him to focus more on the pup then he would me. Is that selfish?....I'm sure you all understand what I'm saying. I think I would get another boy cuz I love boys.....I'm all about the boys.

Any suggestions, recommendations, advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you so much!

I know just what you mean, Cooper was 10 months old when I got Carley. I am all about the boys too, but something about Carley spoke to me. I was worried about how Cooper would do, he actually isn't a big fan of other dogs and he is SUCH a Momma's boy too.
They got along from day one and I know we were lucky there. I will always have two from now on, I think it was the best decision I ever made for Cooper and myself. He is still such a momma's boy and of course Carley is a Daddy's girl, and they really do get along really, really well. They miss each other when one or the other isn't around. I think if you have the time and the money for two, it is definitely what you should do. I found love isn't divided when you have two, but multiplied...just like with kids.
Best of luck with whatever you decide

also, I wanted to add, the first couple of days after I got Carley, I did question my decision, not because of Cooper, but myself, two seemed like ALOT more work at first, but after those first few days, when I saw how much he enjoyed her, she just fit right in like she had always been here..but the first few days, I did question myself.

Chip was 10 months when we got Smokey. For about the first two weeks all they did was fight, but now they are best friends and Chip still has time for his mommy!

Thank you. That is such honest, sweet advice. Do they both cuddle up with you at night? Are they both in your lap when you are sitting? Was it hard to potty train the new one?....and did your 10 month have setbacks with the pottytraining? What about regulating the puppy vs adult dog food?

The food wasn't a problem, Cooper was actually always a picky eater, and when Carley came along, he ate because she did, so that was a really big bonus.
As for potty training, Cooper was totally trained to go outside and when I got Carley she was pee pad trained, and it took a bit for her to make the transition, but here, she took her cues from Cooper and would go when he did outside...we did have the small issue that she thought every area rug was a pee pad, but after a couple months she got the hang of it. Cooper had no setbacks, but again, I am home with them and I watched them like a hawk and we spend tons of time outside, so that helped too.
They do both sleep with us, always have and they each snuggle up with us, usually one on each side, so we are penned in...but hey, no complaints here on that score.
They both sit in our laps, usually Cooper in mine, Carley in Daddy's but they do change it up and there isn't jealousy on who is where. They don't usually snuggle together, but where one goes the other is right there too, checking everything out.

I have always had only one dog at a time mainly because I thouhgt my baby would be mad or sad if I brought in another. I finally did it 2 1/2 years ago and it was the best thing. Now I have 4 and they all have their different personalities but all love being with me and each other. Roxie the newest one is my little snuggler, Pixie likes attention but really is the Mom of the group.None of their personalities changed after bringing in another. I think you will be very happy getting another one. Pixie was an adult when I got her so they all ate the same. With Roxie I gave her the same food but a little more. They all sleep with me, one on each side and one at my feet and one next to me

Oh my goodness....you have lots of snuggles at bedtime. How sweet. Did you notice any changes in barking as you added another yorkie? My lil guy only barks when he is playing or if someone comes to the door. I don't want him to turn into a constant barker like lots of dogs I know.....they just bark and bark and bark for no reason.

I was curious about this too as I have completely fallen head over heels for yorkies and want to get a sibling for Bella. Seems like 10 months is the time everyone decides that time is then to get the new puppy.

8 months is still a puppy... so that is good. he will bond easily with another puppy.. dont wait too long.. canines are different from felines... different animals altogether... dogs are pack animals.. they need other dogs to be balanced.. pairs of puppies are happiest.. he is in limbo now without another dog,,

Malibu is 3 and we just got a girl puppy 3 weeks ago...Just a little background on Malibu-he is SPOILED and showered with attention. The first 3 days or so was a little iffy. Nothing aggressive, but I just wasn't sure if he would love her. But now they play all day every day. I feel bad for not doing this sooner because they love each other so much! Do it, but just a bit of info I read about...the best combo is boy/girl. Same sex pairs can be less submissive to each other. 2 is definitely better than 1

I never thought of it like that....thank you for enlightening me. That makes perfect sense.

That's interesting to me....I guess that would be the usual way to go....IMO, to get a girl if you have a boy. But my boy is not dominant at all and is so playful with all dogs that he has interacted with....he is only dominant with the cat....and the cat will let him know "enough." So do you think he will have issues with another boy pup?

Did you research the boy/girl being better than boy/boy or girl/girl? If so, would you be willing to share the links with me. Thank you so much.

I am just going off of what I read...no personal experience here. Here is a little bit of what I found...
1. Choose a puppy of the opposite sex. Even among neutered dogs, same-sex disagreements or rivalries are far more common than opposite-sex ones.
That comes from Anything we should know about introducing a new puppy to our current dog? | Ask Metafilter

2. That being said, as far as male or female....again, in very general terms, a male and female tend to get along better, and then 2 males. Last of all, two females...Again, there are many varying factors, so I would really not spend a great deal of time over this.
This is what I read, but can't find the exact link to. It said something about male-female being the best combo, male-male was not as good, and female-female is the worst. This came from ? regarding adding puppy and other dogs in house.

I am sure it would be fine, I just wanted to give you a heads up about possible dominance issues.
