| 4 months and already marking? I have an older dog (a little over a year old) that I had neutered on Tuesday. Mason, my 4 month old has been lifting his leg outside when he pees and what we call "popping his clutch" when he does the big nasty outside. He has been doing this for about 2-3 weeks now. My groomer and my vet said he is just probably watching the older inside dog and our lab who is outside and copying their behavior. Well, I took him to my Mom's house to play with his litter mate. He went into her washroom and marked her clothes hamper. Now, my mom is a neat freak. There was no old pee pad or dirty towel anywhere that may have had her puppies scent on it that he may have just been peeing on. She throws a pee pad away everytime her puppy goes one time on it. (I'm not kidding!) Mason has not done this in my house but I am a little worried that this is the beginning of trouble if I have to wait another 6 to 8 weeks before I can have him neutered. My vet will not neuter until they are 6 months old. Has anyone had a male start this young? |

| My male did this from day one when I got him. He was right at 5 months when I brought him home. I think he picked it up from the kennel, maybe watching the other dogs. At first we thought we had been lied to about his age, but the vet confirmed he was around 5 months... so... good luck! Mine still likes to mark my dads recliner when I take him there, even though he is potty trained. |

| What is the protocol for neutering? I have all males, (inside and outside) so an unwanted litter was never an issue. My older male -not a Yorkie- that I just had neutered never marked indoors. He had a very small but suspicious lump come up on his scrotum. My vet said it was not cancer but could one day lead to it. I can't remember the scientific word he used. (He said it was something on the stem of something.) Anyway, that is why we had him neutered. But he waits until 6 months to neuter. I did not get into the specifics with him as to why because at that time, Mason had never marked inside. And so far, has only done it that one time at my mom's house. Should I look around for another vet or is 6 months the norm. Is there any hard and fast rule as to when this should be done? There is another Vet in the area that I used in an emergency in the past that I would also trust. I don't know her age policy on neutering. IT could possibly be the same. |

| I would just use belly bands until he is six months old.My two boys were at 6-7months old when they were neutered.

| Usually dogs will mark in new surroundings, such as visiting. They make it their spot especially if they have an alpha complex. It really has nothing to do with "watching" other dogs do it. Dogs don't usually learn things like that from watching. It is a dominance reaction. If there are or have been other dogs in the house, or a bitch in heat, an alpha complex dog will mark. He doesn't necessarily have to be the dominant dog. My subordinate male marks in strange surroundings, immediately, probably hoping to beat the dominant male to the mark. Best bet when visiting anywhere where you don't want to be mortified by embarrassment is a belly band, at least until he has worn himself out. Melissa and Rambeau (Bugzy does that don't he mom?) |

| Tobi is only 14 weeks and has been hiking his leg, marking and hunching anything he can since I brought him home at 9 weeks. He is the second yorkie I have had and my first never acted this way. I was shocked he did this at such a young age.
