Usually dogs will mark in new surroundings, such as visiting. They make it their spot especially if they have an alpha complex. It really has nothing to do with "watching" other dogs do it. Dogs don't usually learn things like that from watching. It is a dominance reaction. If there are or have been other dogs in the house, or a bitch in heat, an alpha complex dog will mark. He doesn't necessarily have to be the dominant dog. My subordinate male marks in strange surroundings, immediately, probably hoping to beat the dominant male to the mark. Best bet when visiting anywhere where you don't want to be mortified by embarrassment is a belly band, at least until he has worn himself out.
