| This was so strange...what do you think? I took so long to post about this b/c I needed to think clearly about it, but I wanted to see if anything like this has happened to anyone else. The day before yesterday (Tuesday), not long after I got Madison home from his neuter, I went to let both Max and Madison out in the back to go weewee. We have those horrible vertical blinds (the CHEAP kind, not nice ones) and they're always getting twisted or wonky....I had them pulled partway across the sliding door to keep the hot sun out as long as I could, so I went to open them before pulling them across. When I went to open them a little, they were stuck (as per usual), so I pulled kind of hard on them, and one of the slats fell out and fell down to the floor (they're LONG) and Max was standing close to the door, waiting for me to open it. Well, Max has always been a little scared of the blinds to begin with, like if they're blowing when there's a breeze. Anyhow, this slat fell (didn't hit him) and he ran over to the sofa. I turned around and saw him sitting between the sofa and the cocktail table and he was SHAKING harder than I've EVER seen him shake. I felt so bad, so I went over and picked him up, telling him it was "OK", but he just shook harder and harder. His eyes seemed to focus on me but his teeth were clenched. I was alone and couldn't possibly drive myself anywhere even if I were inclined to do so, and couldn't take the time to even call anyone, I was so scared and worried. I finally pried his mouth open, just to make sure his airway was patent and open, which it was. But he shook for a good 5 or more minutes. I could tell he could hear me, but he just couldn't stop shaking. When I put him onto the bed, it seemed like his front legs were stiff and he was a little unsteady for a few seconds. I am only used to human seizures. Does this sound like it might have been a seizure? I mean of course, it COULD have been, but I'm just not sure. And I know that it never would have occurred if that slat hadn't fallen down and scared him, so could fear precipitate a seizure, or was he just scared poopless? I just don't know what to think at this point. I just don't want it to happen again. My poor little baby! He's fine now btw.

YT 2000 Club Member | Awe, poor lil guy, sounds like he was scared poopless. I don't know though, as I've never had a dog that had seizures (except for when Gibbs passed away and what you described wasn't what Gibbs did) Maybe someone else could give you a better answer on this. I know there's different types of seizures for people so I bet there are for animals as well. Our son had grand mal seizures for his first 5 years of life and they were very different then other seizures I've seen. Did you call and speak with your vet about it? Maybe they could answer this question for you.

| My Lady is an epileptic and she's never had a seizure triggered by fear. I'm guessing the little poor guy was just terrified. I wouldn't be surprised if you had problems with him going out that door from now on. |

I didn't call the vet b/c it was after they were closed and now my regular vet is on vacation and I don't know the guy taking her place and he doesn't know Max. Well, I'll put it this way; I know OF the guy, but I don't like him.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Oh, poor Max! I just hate it when they shake and I can't make it go away, I feel so terrible! I'm thinking, for some reason, that it doesn't sound like a seizure - even though he was kind of stiff. Although - a very loud sound can induce a seizure - but I think it would've generalized a bit, don't you? Also, I think he would've drooled a bit as his mouth was involved, if the "possible" seizure was localized but included mouth/front of body. Were his eyes funky or acting normal? Poor honey. Another thought I had was - do you think maybe he was scared of something before he even came to the door - something outside maybe? So then, the combo of wanting to come in bc he was scared, then the blind falling just scared the poo out of him?

No, no drooling...he was sitting straight up when I was holding him, but his jaw was clenched and I know sometimes when people have seizures that happens too. He definitely wasn't scared before that thing fell; he had just run over to the door so I could open it up to let them out. His eyes were looking at me, and didn't look TOO weird while this was happening. It was just how hard he was shaking...not like that shaking they do normally when they're excited or scared (or waiting for food)...this was really really hard. I don't know, sometimes it's just so hard to figure these little guys out! Geeze, he had a rough day yesterday! The gardeners had been there earlier (his bark fiesta day) and he had to take care of that ALL ALONE b/c Madison was busy being neutered, and then he got in trouble b/c he raced outside when one of the gardeners was in the back and I made the mistake of going to get the towels off the lounges before they used the leaf blower. Maybe it was just the combination of being reprimanded and later having that evil piece of plastic falling toward him! He hardly ever gets spoken to sternly b/c he's so good almost all the time. The gardeners and the pest control guy just push his buttons, LOL. My sweet little boy....I suppose time will tell, but why do these things only happen AFTER the vet is closed.

| Poor baby!! I knew I was never a vertical blind fan. And now I know why - they're mean and scare the babies! My Reggie has occasional seizures. He also has unrelated severe storm phobias/terrors. There have been a few times where during one of his storm terrors, he has gone into what I would describe (non-medically) as a sort of modified/mini/non-threatening seizure. He gets sort of glazy, very stiff, and shakes, not only uncontrollably, but extremely HARD. He's fine afterward. I'm sure (and hoping) that he'll be fine. But please don't let those mean ol' blinds get him again!!

| Consider the size of your baby and the size of the slat and what have you got? Kind of like a tree falling on us ! I'd shake too....They do get spooked very easy though...

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Sounds like he was just terrified. My pom had a seizure a few months ago and she let out this weird howl and then started contorting and fell over and went stiff. My dtr and I were screaming because we thought she was dead. After a few minutes, which seemed like a long time, she slowly started to move her back legs, then her front and opened her eyes and we sat her up. I took her to the er clininc and they said it was a grand mal seizure. So it sounds more like fear with Max. Poor baby

| It sounds like he was just scared. Peanut does this when the fire alarm goes off or when there is alot of thunder. He will be fine. Just give him alot of TLC when this happens.

| Thank you everyone~ it is really comforting to get replies that understand what I'm trying to describe and am never sure if I'm being clear enough, albeit, WORDY. I feel a little better that whatever it was, I just need to stay calm and comfort him as best I can and just make sure he's breathing (I have a HUGE hangup about that for some reason...sometimes you feel so frantic, you aren't sure and there's NEVER a little mirror around or a stethoscope nearby when stuff like this happens). I swear, if this wasn't a leased house, I'd rip those blinds out of here immediately (actually they would have been gone the day we moved in). And if I told my dh, he'd totally freak out and probably call the landlord and demand that they get rid of them and replace them with something else, LOL. One thing that I DO, is keep notes on things that happen like this in a file for Max (and Madison has his own file too). It really helps when something occurs and it's not something that happens all the time, (or maybe it IS) but you can go back and look to see when it happened last, or how frequently it seems to be happening and what the episode was like. Like when they get sick, how they were acting that day before they were sick, and what they were eating, what their poops were like; what their activity was like, etc. It's really helped me a lot to kind of figure out if something is really DIFFERENT or an emergency (I mean, I know some emergencies are OBVIOUS, but some are not so obvious). And if I do have to take them in for medical attention, I can give precise information instead of my usual vague (one day is pretty much like the next here) "well, sometime last year....or maybe it was the year before....." sort of information. I swear, my brain is like a sieve anymore.....so notes are a good thing.
