| Losing teeth but cannot get him a cleaning under anesthesia?! Ok , let me try to explain what is going on with my baby. Well he's 4 yrs old and weighs 3 lbs. He also has MVD microvascular dysplasia. Sorry if the spelling is off. Anyway I asked about getting his teeth cleaned like 2 yrs ago. My vet told me that she would not be able to put him under to do a cleaning. She said the risk was too high for a little one like him plus his condition also. She told me to try my best and get a scaler, wrap him up in a towel and clean 1 tooth per day so I dont stress him out.Well this is nearly impossible because as soon as he sees the scaler he screams like crazy.Plus some of his teeth are loose and I know this really must hurt him. I have had loose teeth due to having braces and trust me it hurts if someone is scraping them ! he's lost several teeth and I feel he is going to lose the rest within another 1-2 yrs I love him to death . She was not the only vet to tell me that the risk was not worth the dental cleaning. He has bad plaque around the top gumline.I have scraped a lot off but it takes so much force to scrape this off ,it really hurts him. Our other dogs do NOT have anything close to this. Yes I do brush his teeth often. The vet told me that she suspects that the bile/acid maybe a reason why he has such a buildup of plaque. Also he's on a special diet and it's canned food. That's another reason also. He will NOT eat hardfood . I wasted money on buying the low protein hard food and he will not eat it ,no matter what I put on it so this is not an option . My question: What else can I do or what can I use for his teeth? Genie |

| You may want to try some petzlife gel. I have one that gets a bad tartar build-up and it really helps! I know the YT Member hasrv4fun has it available at Nolens Yorkies Home Hope this gives your little guy some relief. Good luck

| Genie, Any disease of the liver can be irritated by introducing any foreign substance that needs to be filtered by the liver. Using gas or injectable meds or anesthesia would be one of these. I think you best bet is to brush as well as possible and have those loose teeth pulled if they are being irritated, not under anesthesia. Lupie lived her entire life without having her teeth brushed, she had four pulled at spaying (6 years old) but she lost a lot on her own. She never seemed in pain, but she was always on a hard kibble diet and lived to sixteen. There is no clear answer for this type of situation. If the vets say no, then they are probably right. Lupie had awful, ugly teeth, but I still loved her to death! Melissa and Rambeau (didn't know her but I sure hear alot!) |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Lot's of Yorkietalk members use Petzlife gel. It removes tartar, and says if it's really bad, it takes about three months of daily use. I use the spray about 2-3 times a week and the gel during his weekly groom session. They recommend regular tooth brushing as the Petzlife softens the tartar, and the brush scrapes it away. You can get spray or gel, the Petzlife site gives more information, but you can purchase it for less if you do a google. PetzLife Products Inc - Products For a Healthier Pet

| Thank YOU! I was praying that there was some sort of gel or spray that would help soften this because it is HARD! The pieces that I was able to scrape off after scraping like 30 times on one tooth ,it looked like little pieces of cracked rice! I will look into this and try it out. Thank you! Genie P.S. even with the gas to put him under, the vet does not feel comfortable and told me he would probably have complications. He was put under gas twice before and had some complications the first time .The second time was exploratory surgery to look for a shunt(thank God he didnt have one) He did not have complications for that. However I really think this is because I took him to a Vet Hospital that specializes in very small breeds and the surgeon and staff was absolutely great and very attentive to my little guy's every need. |

| Genie, I'm so sorry about your baby's teeth...How bad is Cookie's MVD? Does he ever have symptoms? Do you have him on supplements? You may want to join the liver shunt and mvd group if you haven't already as there are many things that we have learned that could probably help Cookie... Donating YT 30K Club Member | I just Had Pixie my 2 1/2 year old's teeth and 5 pulled under anesthesia. She has terrible plaque and inflamed gums. She eats the same as my others and her teeth were so bad. I tried the Petzlife, brushing and dental wipes but did not get any improvement so she had to be put under. They took every precaution, antibiotics before an after and her teeth look like brand new. I couldn't believe the difference. Cali my 3 year old's teeth are not bad but she has retained baby teeth that the er vet couldn't take out when she was spayed as she stated loosing body temp so they brought her to. She was diagnosed with by a liver biopsy at the same time with mild MVD. My vet does not want to put her under for her teeth so she lives with extra teeth. I have started being vigilant in brushing all of their teeth and using the Petzlife so I can prevent another problem like Pixies. I would try and work with her daily toi get her more tolerant of the brushings and get the Petzlife.

| I have been using petz life everyu day for 2 years and while it has helped it is very expensive and not any cure-all by any means. I now have bought an enzyme toothpaste from petrodex and it is doing just as good a job. I now alternate them every couple days. I would ask the vet about antibiotic as the problem with bad teeth is it can cause kidney, heart etc. damage. When my Ashlee got too old to be put under she was on and off antibiotics and she lived to 16 years old. It helped to prevent further complications |
