| Crates...... Ok as always i am confused again lol. I Have a crate for Bailey at the bottom of my bed? Its HUGE as i thought with him sleeping in it of a night that it would have to be big so he had room to play and move about in it, i thought all u YT have them in your rooms by your bed and i often hear Questions being asked like ''is your yorkie crate trained'' or ''do u have a crate in your bed room'' so i thought eeek i better get one of them, sooo off i went to the shops and got the biggest crate i could find. (which cost me alot) thinking that if he is gonna be locked init over night (as if not he would jump on me non stop) that it had to be big!! Thats untill i have just seen someone post a pic of there crate... urm... that looks nothing like mine eek lol!! mine is HUGE thats what i thought they needed so they had the space and freedom in the night to sleep or play with out being able to jump on mummy. ok so am really confused if i have bought the wrong thing.. we have had it for 6 months now so i could not take it back, but wondering if i now need to go out and get the crate that i was ment to get the small one?? I am worried now that he would not like being in a small confined space as he is used to running about. Can you please post pictures of your crates and where do u keep them? it is to late to get another smaller one? do u shut the door on your crate of a night? i do to Bailey but thats coz it is so big lol. and a VERY silly Question but can someone tell me why they have a crate that is so small and what are the benifits and why they are best for the yorkie? i just thought people had them so there baby could not get in trouble of a night? gees i feel so silly

YT Addict | Hi, The crate is supposed to help with potty training.....the one that you have is definatley too big.....it should be big enough for him/her to sleep, stand up and turn around......the idea is for him not to go to the bathroom where he sleeps....where did you buy it from?

| Sorry ... I know people say you need to crate them ...but I just dont . But the people who do say a smaller crate with just enough room to turn around in , is the right size . I tried pack and plays for Jax and Jolie when they were little ... but since I work I felt guilty about them being alone ... so I let them sleep with me ... when I am not home they have the kitchen which is 18 X 20 with a gate and pee pads in case ... most of the time they do not use the pee pads .

| i have the soft crates for my girls to sleep in. They line up by my side of the bed. They all know their own "bedroom" and run into them at night and they get zipped up. That is all these are used for. They have the downstairs for the most part to run around in. Just don't use the crate for punishment as they will not want to be there anymore after that. A crate should be their safe place to go. i have the little soft airline sherpa crates around and they stay open all day. My girls nap in those during the day or in their little chairs or beds. Your little boy sounds like he is doing great on the potty training!! |

| Hot Rod's crate is not so big but we still have a part of it divided off. We've used it since we got him in Dec 07. We keep it in our family room. We attached his expen to it. We used to close the door at night, but since we got the xpen, we have not-the expen keeps him confined. We have his food and water and pee pad all there for him. After awhile I bought and put a regular bed in it. I have always put a lightweight cover on it and it still has the cover on it. It depends on how well you feel with Bailey out of it at night if you want to lock the door. If potty training is an issue, then keep him in it. I probably wouldn't get a smaller one so long as he is not pottying in his now--why spend money on another crate? I would get a solid floor surface in it though so he could be more comfortable walking around. You do have a large crate, but if it doesn't bother you and if space is not a problem, I would say don't worry about it.

| My crate is the same size as Hot Rod's Crate in the above post. Don't feel silly, how would you have known and your rational makes sense from a mom's perspective. I do think your crate is too big for your little pup though. The crate training is for potty training & to create a safe zone for your puppy. I trained my pup to sleep in his crate for he first 6 weeks that I had him and then I started putting him in my bed. Now he is completely comfortable in his crate and goes in there when I go to the gym to workout & sometimes just takes a nap in there on his own with the door open. Yes, the crate is supposed to be closed when he goes to bed at night. These little guys are very trainable, don't beat yourself up over this...it's an easy fix. Maybe you could sell the crate on YT to someone that has several furbabies because someone may need one that size if they all crate train together?....just a thought. Good luck!

| Cashi's crate is in the livingroom and my bedroom door is right by it. I leave my door cracked at night. He only goes in there to sleep. we leave it open during the day and he has gone in there to sleep. He also has a playpen( a cute little boy baby one!!) that we use when we are unable to watch him. I also have a pee pad in it and his food dishes. When we first got him we had a hard time getting him to concentrate on eating and he was really distracted easily. I hope to eventually do away with the playpen. His crate is small, but I do (I know this is bad) put a pee pad in the back and his fleece blanket up front. He is only about 10 weeks old and I try and get up to let him out and go, but I work nights and when I sleep on my days off, I have a hard time getting up. My plan for next week is to get up at 4:00 am and let him go so that maybe he will not have accidents on his pad and bed. I really have come to the conclusion that it is trial and error.

| LOL. I did the same exact thing! When I got Lulu, they convinced me to buy the bigger crate. Big mistake! I could fit a german shepard in my crate! I realized my boo boo about 3 weeks into it, and I called them to see if there was a way I can excahge it for a smaller one. No luck. So I have a honkin' crate in my bedroom that she barely uses. what a pain. |

Senior Yorkie Talker | I got a medium sized crate because I figured my Yorkie would've grown into it. It's the same size one my roommate has for her Jack Russell and that fits both the Jack Russell and Maltese/Yorkie when they like to lay together. It's pretty big, but not too big. It's a step up from the small one. Bailey looks adorable in that ginormous crate though lol. |
