Hot Rod's crate is not so big but we still have a part of it divided off. We've used it since we got him in Dec 07. We keep it in our family room. We attached his expen to it. We used to close the door at night, but since we got the xpen, we have not-the expen keeps him confined. We have his food and water and pee pad all there for him. After awhile I bought and put a regular bed in it. I have always put a lightweight cover on it and it still has the cover on it.

It depends on how well you feel with Bailey out of it at night if you want to lock the door. If potty training is an issue, then keep him in it. I probably wouldn't get a smaller one so long as he is not pottying in his now--why spend money on another crate? I would get a solid floor surface in it though so he could be more comfortable walking around. You do have a large crate, but if it doesn't bother you and if space is not a problem, I would say don't worry about it.
