My crate is the same size as Hot Rod's Crate in the above post. Don't feel silly, how would you have known and your rational makes sense from a mom's perspective. I do think your crate is too big for your little pup though. The crate training is for potty training & to create a safe zone for your puppy. I trained my pup to sleep in his crate for he first 6 weeks that I had him and then I started putting him in my bed. Now he is completely comfortable in his crate and goes in there when I go to the gym to workout & sometimes just takes a nap in there on his own with the door open. Yes, the crate is supposed to be closed when he goes to bed at night. These little guys are very trainable, don't beat yourself up over this...it's an easy fix. Maybe you could sell the crate on YT to someone that has several furbabies because someone may need one that size if they all crate train together?....just a thought. Good luck!
