The Humane Society of the US is asking everyone to show their support and sign a Pledge to help stop Puppy Mills

But this seems to say that you pledge not to buy pets from any internet site. Don't we all have websites for our puppies, etc.? Wouldn't that be against what they are asking for in the pledge? I want to sign, but....

I questioned this too, but I know in my mind & heart I wouldn't buy from someone I didn't know a lot about. I think this means that you wouldn't just buy because you saw a cute pix online, not knowing anything about the breeder

I feel the same way. I don't like the language of the pledge. What they could do is to let everyone know exactly how to identify a puppy mill. They're painting with a very broad brush and all those signatures could be used to push for legislation that would probably be short-sighted and put unreasonable restrictions on good breeders and still not stop puppy mills. They will still exist but will be made to hide their operations. This could make it worse for the dogs, if that's imaginable. I think education and awareness is the answer and shows like Oprah's will at least make a lot of people aware though that show alone isn't enough to really educate people but it will probably draw the biggest ever for the subject. Hey, it's a start. and all animal lovers should do their part, too.

Many websites are just dog brokers who buy their dogs from puppymills. A pet buyer should always check out the breeder in person and visa versa.

I would be leary of this because you are actually agreeing not to use a site like YTs featured breeders and so on to find a pup. And you can't assume you think they are saying this or that.
I wouldn't have a few of my show dogs if I had not come across a webpage and made contact with the breeder. I was careful but if they had not had a webpage I would have never known they existed.
I agree 100% puppymills MUST be Shut down.

I agree. I am sooo against puppy mills, but I cannot sign. There are some very good breeders, and others might disagree, that have websites. (Sadly, there are horrible ones also).
But I cannot pledge to that - I got all 3 of my babies from websites and have learned tons about good breeders vs. bad breeders in the process. I wouldnt change the lessons I have learned though, as my babies are my world and each is precious to me.

Yes, but you didn't just buy from the website did you? You actually saw the dogs and checked out the breeder first, right? I don't think it means just because they have a website you can't buy from them, but don't buy from a website. We can't stop the puppymills until buyers start buying from ethical breeders.

I bought from a website, and I know there are several others on yt who bought from my same breeder and I think she is very ethical.
I guess the difference is I did a lot of research on her before buying.

Right, you might say you had references, so you were not really buying from just the website. When they are asking people to pledge not to buy from a website, they are informing the public that this is not a good way to select a breeder. Anyone can put up cute little puppy pictures.
