| Too Small to Spay? My little Lulu is 9 months old & only weighs 2.2 lbs. Do you all think she is too small to spay & I should wait for a while longer or would it be best for me to do it before her first heat? Has anyone spayed a yorkie at 2lbs? Thanks!

Zoey is probably mid 2 lb range right now. I will have her spayed probably the end of the month or maybe early next month. Just waiting a bit on the adult teeth to come in so we can pull whatever needs pulling so it's only one time under.

| Teddi was about 2 lbs when she was spayed. Then when she was about 2 lbs 8 oz she had teeth pulled and a dew claw removed. Then when she was 2lbs 10 oz she had her liver shunt surgery. Today she is approximately 3 lbs and 3 surgeries!!!

| I'm glad you asked this question...KaCee will be 6 months old in two weeks and I'm debating whether or not to wait to have her spayed. Seems like quite a few have had good luck with the 2-3 lb range though..

| a friend of mine wanted the have her chihuahua spayed a few years ago and the vet wouldnt do it because at the time she was under 3 lbs.....he gave her some meds similar to birth-control.....and it stopped her from going into heat.....it worked great for them....when she got to 4 pounds they took her back to be spayed....

| Thanks for all the responses. I'm sooo nervous putting her under for the spay. She was 1.8 lbs when I got her at 14 weeks old & she really hasn't grown much over the past months - now only 2.2 lbs at 9 months. We usually get our dogs done around 6-7 months old, but where she was so tiny I've put it off until now as the breeder said she shouldn't come into heat until around 10 mths old. I don't really think she will gain much more weight, I'd be really surprised if she reached 3 lbs. - but I would wait a little more if she would gain another lb. or so....

| i think she'll be okay... ask your vet about the type of anesthesia they're going to use. there's an anesthesia called Isoflurane that is a gas inhalant, not an injection. it's for high risk/small dogs. apparently, the dogs wake up easier when this is used. the vet should induce the dog first using ProPoFlo to put in an IV catheter for fluids (or meds if something goes wrong)... and then they'll keep her sleeping with the Isoflurane... i don't think i'd do it any other way. Kash just turned 4 months on Saturday, but he's just over 2 lbs... my vet said she wants to wait until he's 3 lbs, but i don't want him to get much older before he's neutered because i don't want him to start getting those "urges." if he hasn't reached 3 lbs by 5 months old, then i think i'm going to have the surgery done anyway (using the Isoflurane). also, i've heard that the longer you wait to spay/neuter, the more likely there might be complications... good luck!

| and the anesthesia is a gas rather than an injection when they are this small (at least it should be!) She had 15 tetth pulled and microchipped at the same time. It's best to do it all at once
