Can someone please describe what might indicate a dog has either. Anyone have any info/knowledge? Its much appreciated

| The trachea is like a dryer or vacumn cleaner hose. It has ribs or rings holding the round tube together. In the toy breeds the ribs are not strong. When the ribs or rings get damaged, then the trachea can collapse. Sometime a toy breed is born with an oval trachea. When these toy breeds have an attack, it sounds like they are choking. And in reality, they are. It can be repaired with surgery, should the attacks come on a frequent basis.

| This is the best that I can do: TRACHEA COLLAPSE There can be a weakness in the trachea and if it collapses the dog cannot breathe. Emergency surgery and inserting plastic devices or coils can be done in some cases to keep the dog alive. This can be caused by severe hacking from a cold or it can be a congenital thing. Symptoms -- A loud honking, dry cough. Gasping, unable to breath. http://www.shooterdog.com/alexfaq3.htm |

| Linus has collapsing trachea. I have no idea exactly what causes it though. From what my vet told me, reverse sneezing is a symptom of collapsing trachea. It's only when it gets very frequent that it becomes serious. Linus does it about 3 times a day, usually when he gets excited to see me for whatever reason. My vet says that if it gets more frequent that he will put him on asthma medication to make his trachea open better. I hope that helps!

| I have no idea if this is related in any way but you mentioned asthma medicine. Chloe just started making that weird honking noise today and I just got diognosed with asthma last week(which I thought was weird because I thought you developed that as a child). COuld there be somethign in the air ?

| That could also be true. My other baby Lucy does that sometimes because she has really bad allergies. The vet said she wouldn't need meds unless it got worse. Yorkies are very prone to collapsing trachea, and it does have many of the same symptoms as asthma. It could be one or the other. If it is more frequent than 3 times a day, I would take Chloe to vet to double check. If she does it again, just rub her throat up and down and it'll clear up almost immediately. BTW, when I was 19 I suddenly developed all kinds of weird allergies that I never had before (tomato being the weirdest, but also pollen and mold...so I think it's normal considering that you can develop things based on environmental conditions like pollution).
