The trachea is like a dryer or vacumn cleaner hose. It has ribs or rings holding the round tube together. In the toy breeds the ribs are not strong. When the ribs or rings get damaged, then the trachea can collapse. Sometime a toy breed is born with an oval trachea. When these toy breeds have an attack, it sounds like they are choking. And in reality, they are. It can be repaired with surgery, should the attacks come on a frequent basis.
