| Yes, that is fine. You can also give cottage cheese and yogurt.

I would never give a dog pasteurized milk for the following reasons: MILK - Some pets can tolerate small amounts of milk. But generally most dogs and cats find it very hard to digest milk because they lack a certain enzyme to properly break down the lactose. It can ferment in the intestines and cause diarrhea. Also the pasteurized milk we get from our supermarket is heavily heated which damages the proteins in milk. Calves that were feed pasteurized milk died before maturity.

Dairy products are high in fat, which can cause pancreatitis, gas and diarrhea. A small amount of non-fat, plain yogurt is usually safe.

You know, just because something doesn't happen to them the first or 2nd time, or sometimes maybe never will, is it worth taking a chance? Thats the only way you can look at it.

A small amount of milk once a week isn't going to hurt. You would need to discontinue if it causes GI upset. The first ingredient in some yogurt is milk (cottage cheese is made from milk too) and that is pasteurized. Cottage cheese is just easier for animals to digest than milk. Cottage cheese is also an ingredient in Innova. If you are concerned about the fat content, give skim. If you want to give cottage cheese but are worried about the sodium and fat, give low sodium and non or low fat. Plain yogurt is fine too (even flavored on occasion with NO artificial sweetners). I like Stonyfield the best. All that being said, I think cottaga cheese and yogurt are more easily digested, so I give those and stay away from plain milk.

I think cottage cheese and yogurt would be fine in small amount. A little milk won't harm her but it is not a 'healthy' food for dogs. I am 'anti-milk' even for humans because of all the bad things I have read about it. JMHO Now fresh cows milk or goats milk would be a different story but it is too hard to find the real thing. I think canned milk is okay for orphaned puppies but adults just don't need milk. There are so many healthy choices for treats like carrots, apples, steam broccoli, sweet potatoes, etc. Last edited by bjh; 02-29-2008 at 09:41 AM.

I've been giving a little goat milk to my dogs (and fosters) for the past 48 years without any problems at all. They don't get it often though. I also give non-fat plain yogurt and cottage cheese. Only about a level tablespoon two to three times a week.
