| ![]() They probably wish their dogs were AKC registered since that is the most recognized registry

| ![]() The only reasons I can think of that someone would be defensive is if 1) they have something to hide, or 2) you were being insulting with your questions. Now, you clearly were not insulting anyone or their dogs by asking that simple question which you certainly should be interested in, so... I think that if you stand behind your dogs and what you are producing then you shouldn't mind ANY questions asked, regardless of what registry you are using. If you can't do that, well... |

| ![]() I talked to someone the other day about a female, the lady was very nice and then I asked was the puppy AKC, Well everything changed. She went on to tell me that the puppies regestered with AKC were not as good of quality and they would be really big dogs. She said that AKC was not a good program. I just said ( thank you so much for your time) and hung up the phone. I have had both AKC, and CKC. AKC you know more about what you are getting. I would not go with anything else.

| ![]() Any breeder who doesn't want you asking this is probably not reputable. I wouldn't waste my time with them. Registry is important to me as it is for a lot of people. It doesn't matter if I'm not breeding or not showing. AKC is my registry of choice and I would want even my pets registered. I would hope they would be standard though. When they are registered you can look at their bloodlines which is important to me.

| ![]() When I was looking for my furbabies I fell in love with two girls... OH I fell IN LOVE...big time. But they were not AKC. I did not care. I just knew that I wanted them and that I loved them, and HAD to have them no matter what registration they were. KINDA LIKE COLOR (KWIM) I fell in LOVE with the puppy Not the papers. ![]()

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | ![]() Well, when a breeder registers their pups with the AKC it kinda gives you more peace of mind that the breeder is more responsible. Some may get defensive because they know they are not "reponsible", otherwise they would have a nice and good explanation of why the pups are not AKC registered. I personally don't mind if they are registered or not. Bengi is not registered. If I would buy from a YT member who's reputable, I wouldn't mind if he's registered or not, because I already know the breeder. But when you know nothing about the breeder, AKC gives you a little more to rely on. |

| ![]() IMHO, any breeder who gets upset over a registry question needs a little course in anger management ![]() It was explained to me that the AKC has far more stringent policies for registration, up to and including "dropping in" to review records. AKC is basically only of any value if you are interested in showing, and the AKC can compel someone whose breeding stock has genetic problems to neuter the dogs to prevent future offspring. I'm sure it gets much deeper than that, but there it is in a nutshell. I have no intention of getting into a show ring with my dogs. Nor is it my intention to breed them. In fact, my little girl's breeder won't send you the registry papers until you send her the bill from a vet setting forth the fact that the dogs have been neutered/spayed. At that point, what good are "papers" anyway? I can understand a breeder jealously guarding the right to add "AKC Registered Puppies" in their adverts, but it actually doesn't amount to a hill of beans: there can be "sports" no matter what. It's like saying my puppies are Ferraris versus your silly little Porshe ... Both my pups are CKC. I really don't care one way or the other. I fell in love with little bundles of fur; I saw their parents; I kinda know what to expect. I couldn't love them any more if their registration papers came diamond-studded. I gave up "name dropping/recognition" a long time ago. To some, it may be important - and more power to 'em. To me, it's not a big deal anymore. Last edited by Lee B; 02-18-2008 at 09:35 AM. |

I'm not trying to start an argument, but the theory that "they must be better breeders w/ better dogs because they are AKC registered" gets tossed around alot and it's just not a valid/true statement. Last edited by BamaFan121s; 02-18-2008 at 10:05 AM. | |||

Donating YT 14K Club Member | ![]() I wouldn't own a dog unless it is AKC. I trust AKC where as some of the other registries, they can get papers on a dog that may not necessarily be purebred. This is my own preferance, however. I do not get offended if people ask me and you can rest assured that I'll be asking, as well. JMO

| ![]() I don't think anyone should be defensive when asking ANY questions about pups for sale. What I will say about AKC is this; I really do not believe that how the pups are registered is as important as the reputation of the breeder. I say this because I have an AKC registered Yorkie and after buying her found out that her papers were phonied up. The breeder listed another mother as the pups mom because the real mother was ACA or something like that and therefor the litter could not be registered AKC. I only found this out when I took the pup to the vet who I have had for 13 yrs. and he just happened to be the vet she used for her litter. When confronted she admitted to it. My contention is AKC, ACA or any other variation of letters is really useless because how do you know for sure that the parents are who the breeder says they are. This is why I think that when buying people really need to go not so much by paperwork but by the reputation of who they are dealing with. Elaine |
