Yep, I found this out the hard way. We've used plastic ones for our two boxers and german shorthair pointer for years. I cleaned them daily but here about two months ago, Isaiah developed a huge pimple like sore on his chin mouth area. Poor guy, it looked so sore. Finally got it cleared up and I no longer use those plastic bowls, I use the metal ones.

What about Fresh flow drinking fountain!?! It's plastic but its filtered. Should I throw it and use metal? I hope not they love the fountain!

Thank you .... as I read this thread, that's exactly what I was wondering!! I have never liked plastic at all, it smells funny. Toto has always had crystal, glass and stainless. She also has a clean water bowl several times a day. I also "sterilize" hers in the dishwasher. I never offer her less than I would expect for myself.

I use ceramic bowls made by Bayou Collectibles in Louisiana. Sheila handmakes them in her studio so I know they are lead free.

They have a hole in the center so they keep beards dry. They are wonderful!

we use glass or porcelain bowls but this is excellent info as one of my cats bowl is plastic and as of now she will have stainless like her sister does.

This is an excellent thread. I use glass Lixit water bottles, the water stays clean, and their beards stay dry.

What a great warning. Coby uses stainless steel, but poor Reggie uses plastic (geez, you'd think he was treated like a second class citizen!?). And Reggie has all sorts of allergies and skin problems. He's getting new bowls!!

Because of her and her GREAT info, I tossed the plastic bowls that I just bought my babies a couple of weeks ago (some of you may remember seeing the pics I posted) and ordered them some new ones online today (porcelain). I had porcelain ones, but they needed ones that were even cuter...so of course they are getting them, lol.

As some of you may know, Tatum has an infection (she's on meds) and has started losing some hair around her nose/mouth area and for all I know, the plastic food bowls could have contributed to the problem. We found out at the vet last week that she does have allergies, but I am not risking anything with the plastic bowls when I can very easily use something else.

Does this apply to water bowls too? I have 2 water feeders that have stainless spouts

but Annika drinks from a plastic bowl when I am not home as she is stays on my counter during the day

I would replace the plastic water bowl. I dont think it matters rather it's the food or the water.

I too, use the water bottle for Maddie. Its just the best. Her face is always nice and dry and water is always clean. I read that this is how they do show dogs to keep there hair nice and to keep it from turning dark.

I hightly recommend using a water bottle to anyone who does use them. It doesnt take them long at all to catch on.

Darn it, I just replaced my ceramic bowls because I discovered they were made in China and bought new plastic bowls from someone here on YT

I was using melamine bowls made for little kids, they have stitch on them & are so cute. Logan has been sick on & off since christmas & after seeing this thread I checked to see if lead toxicity causes his symptoms & it does cause vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite & stomach pain. It also causes a taste in the mouth which would explain his recent snake like licking. I went home after work & checked & yup my cute bowls are made in china. So I told my hubby they are out. So I got out his old ceramic bowls, yup also made in china. So right now he is using 2 of my old corelle bowls, made in the U.S.A. I intend to get him his own set of Corelle this weekend.

Per wikipedia lead toxicity can be treated by taking the leaded item away. It's been proven that vitamin C will also lower the toxicity in the blood, is there any way I can give Logan vitamin C?

Mine said "Made in China" on the bottom. If they don't say made in China on them then they might not be from there. You would think that any dishes would be safe but after hearing about all the toys made in China that tested positive for lead paint, I don't want to take the chance.

They're NOT safe if they're lead crystal. Lead crystal has LEAD in it, and that's why they've put out warnings about people drinking out of lead crystal glassware too much and you're never supposed to store liquids in it as supposedly, the lead can leech into the liquid. It IS beautiful, but def. not safe.
