*sigh* Am I asking too much? Please be honest since maybe what I need is a kick in the butt! I have been looking for a yorkie off and on the last year. I say 'off' because sometimes I would get thisclose to getting a yorkie and then the deal would fall through. So I would be sad for the next few weeks before I started looking again. I wonder if what I am looking for is next to impossible? I want a female yorkie that is small (but not sickenly small) preferably black and gold that is within driving distance to pick up from my home in Michigan. Guess the problem is I REALLY can't spend over $1,000 and that is still way more than I should spend. I wanted to use our tax refund and initially set the "puppy budget" at $500. I just keep running into walls. Numerous puppy finding websites out there are scams. Even the ads in the local paper! "Yorkie pups, $375." Then you call and it's "Oh, that puppy sold, but we have a bunch for $1200!" ARGH!!! I know shipping puppies is probably safe, but I would just rather pick it up. It breaks my heart when I think of that lil pup all alone with the luggage in the dark. =( My want for a puppy has gotten so bad, and my patience so short that I have resorted to two things. One (not so bad) is looking at other kinds of dogs, namely poms. They stay pretty small and are cute, and are cheaper than yorkies. Two (super bad and I hate to admit it, but it is the truth) I have actually considered buying from a......PET STORE! I know, right! Puppy mills! But while my mind says no, those puppies are from puppy mills, my heart says, but you can have the 3 pound yorkie in the color of your choice RIGHT NOW for 5 or 6 hundred dollars! I think it has gotten worse because I am working from home now, and although working from home is great (no commute, no dressing up, etc) it can get lonely since there is no interaction. So, do I hold out for the yorkie of my dreams that may never come around? Do I get this adorable small pom puppy that is being offered to me for cheap? Or....do I get a puppy from a pet store? (I know this is not the answer) Sad in Michigan, pickles |
Now, you know better than to get a puppy from a petstore, and besides, they jack prices up for those puppymill pups. As far as poms, that's all one of my best friends has ever had, and for the most part, they're yappers..when we got to her house,(she has 2), the one never quits barking the whole time we're there, and it's a screeching bark(ear piercing)..as far as flying one, that's an extra $250, so you could add that to what you're wanting to spend..the lady i got my last one from is in Michigan, she's going to be having more pups in March..if you want her name and e-mail, pm me |
If you really can't change your budget at all, I would go with the pom puppy. Buying from a byb or a puppy mill is a horrible idea if you're looking to save money. The breeder we bought from, we thought was a reputable breeder. Turns out, not so much. Franklin had worms so we had to delay his vaccinations. During this time, he contracted parvo. He is still being hospitalized right now and it's costing us over $1600. So all in all, he has cost us probably upwards of $2500. Bad breeders also contribute to the many yorkies who have liver shunts, luxating patellas, and many other problems. These health issues can cost a TON. I know LP surgery is something like $1500 per leg. It really is worth the money you spend finding a reputable breeder that can guarantee a puppy's health. Good luck in your search. |
Also, with puppy mills and backyard breeders, they can sell you a puppy that will "likely only get to be 3-4 lbs" and end up being over 10lbs. That has happened to MANY YTers. For many of us, size isn't an issue.. but if it is for you, I would be wary of that. Tinier puppies are also unhealthy and more prone to health issues. |

You should really hold out, IMO. You can find a good, healthy yorkie pet for that kind of money, you just need to wait til the right one comes along. There are so many great people on here that you can meet and ask about their dogs and where they got them. Try looking in the regional forums, there are many MI members on Yorkie Talk. Trust me, it will be worth waiting even a year for a good puppy, especially if your healthy pup lives 15 or more years! There is a breeder on here in very northern Ohio, she might be a possibility. Just keep poking around, you are bound to find some of the best of the best breeders of yorkies on this site. Best of luck, and welcome to YT! |
Re: Emma HHA, I have actually contacted Sara regarding Emma. She says she got the dog and it is too small for her 2 year old son. There is also no health guarantee whatsoever. I asked her and she said "The dog is fine, but I will take it to my vet to double check before you come to get her". Now, my Dad/Boss trains and occasionally breeds dogs. (bigger dogs) He didn't like the sound of what she had to say at all. No health guarantee? True, the guarantee might not mean much. But, it is the thought that counts! Also, why did she not think of her son when she got this dog? Obviously, she had the son first. ;) Also, he was wondering, what exactly did the son do to the dog to make her want to get rid of it? And, where is the dog being kept now? Locked in a room? He suggested I stay away from that one and wait for a breeder. Also, I know pet stores are a no-no, but they are extremely appealing when you have been waiting a long time for your new friend. |
Pet stores are tempting. I got Chewy at one. I knew nothing of puppy mills at the time. So far he has been very healthy. To my surprise he is only 5.2 pounds... the store thought he would be bigger. He cost a lot... we don't have cheap pet stores here... you pay as much or more then a breeder. Again I knew NOTHING!!! Pet stores are not good places to go to get your puppy but not all puppies are sick that come from them. It breaks my heart to think where he came from. We got our little girl pup from a breeder. We love them both the same.:D Good luck getting your baby, i'm sure the right one will come along. |

Take your time to find the perfect one it is the first thing you can give your new puppy. So many people only think of the fantasy of owning a pet and not the reality. I think that is where a good breeder will ask the hard questions to insure that puppy will have a forever home. It is expensive to own even a healthy yorkie. It seems everytime I go to the vet it is a few hundred dollars. Good Luck in your search! |
I'm sure the right dog will come along...it took me a few years to get Teddi (and then she ends up having a liver shunt!). I wouldn't try to get the cheapest dog you can find. I think a lot of dogs are really you get what you pay for and there is a reason some are so cheap. It's great that you are on this site. I didn't even know about yorkietalk until I had Teddi for a few months. I'm sure you will be able to fine one through here. The other thing about the dogs that are cheap....it usually ends up being a scam. If it seems like a great deal and it's too good to be true - it is! |
well for me and mine,, i waited 30 yrs,, til i got all my kids grown,, and then i got my Yorkie,, which has now turned into YORKIES!! lol,,, enjoy whatever decision you make!:aimeeyork |
Welcome to yt and good luck on your search. I don't know much since Murfee is my first yorkie but even when people say that a yorkie will be small it doesn't always mean that it will be. I was lucky with Murfee. My son and dil bought him for me at a flea market for $500. He is 5 lbs and so far VERY healthy and the love of my life. |
Thanks everyone for reassuring me to try and wait it out. I did put another call into Emma's owner to ask some more questions. I will post an update after I speak with her. =) |
Your "little puppy" from a puppy mill will probably be significantly more than the 3 pounds you are looking for and, trust me when I say this, the initial amount you pay for your yorkie is NOTHING compared to the medical bills that can pile up on a sick yorkie. I would really rethink the petstore puppy. |
Welcome to YT! I know it is so so hard to wait, but don't settle for any dog when you know you want a yorkie from a reputable breeder. Continue looking cautiously for the right one, and maybe you can keep putting money away to save as you are searching...then your budget will grow as you are searching for your new baby. Just try to be patient...you'll be glad you did in the end. I always recommend www.ytca.org to start out looking for breeders. Good Luck :) |
Hi! I'm in Michigan too!!! I have a boy right now (I know your looking for a girl) but I should have another litter this year. (summer time hopefully) Feel free to contact me anytime!!! |
You sound like you are in the same position we were almost a year ago. We just had to be patient. We didn't have much money either and ended up paying $750 for Chip. Smokey was free, but he was a rescue. Good luck and don't lose faith! |
1 Attachment(s) I spent a year looking for my baby. I didn't have $1000.00 to spend on a pup so a breeder was out of the question for me. I just kept looking at the for sale ads in my area and I found a lady who has 4 yorkies and she had an oops. Usually she separates them while the girls are in heat but didn't get to it in time. I went out and looked at Tessa, looked at the parents, the place they lived and looked at her brother too. They all seemed happy and healthy. Tessa did not come registered and did not come with a health guarantee but that was a chance I was willing to take. She was alot cheaper than a breeder though. So far she is healthy and since I plan on having her spayed, a registeration was not an issue for me. She is my baby and I love her with or without having her registered. :D |
i think you should wait for your perfect yorkie, it will be worth it in the end. even try rescues, they always have dogs that need homes for a lot less. you can also try seeing if any breeders have any older puppies that they are willing to sell for less. i don't think you should get the pom either, because if what you REALLY want is a yorkie, you won't be 100% happy with the pom, and will jsut go back to wanting your perfect puppy. give someone else a chance to get her who really does want a pomeranian. oh yeah, and please don't buy one from a pet store thinking that they are telling you the truth. when my mom bought my mika, she was told that she was going to be a tiny yorkie 5-6lbs. she is between 9-10lbs. not that it matters to me, i love her just as much, if not more. please make the right choice. |
Mojo - I'm not going to get a puppy from the pet store. It's just really REALLY hard not to when I know they have them and within my budget. I know I need to be patient, but it gets hard at times. Xnatalie - you are probably right. I knew when I started looking for a dog that I wanted something small. Searching through breeds produced both yorkies and poms - I decided then that I would rather have a yorkie because (it's silly, I know) you can dress them up in cute clothes from time to time. With poms, sometimes their fur gets so big the clothes don't fit them right, and you can't leave them on long. I met a lady at Petsmart with a pom who was experiencing this very problem. Breny - I did visit your site and saw that you had a boy. I have had quite a few people say that they will have girl puppies near the end of summer / beginning of fall - but that just seems soooooooooo far away! LOL But, I have heard nothing but good things about you and your puppies and if by some chance I don't have a dog by then, I am definitely calling you. |
I waited for Gabby for months after I found the right breeder- she had to be born! This lady is in Bellevue Ohio- she has sold puppies to people in Michigan and we got our Gabby from her!!! You should check her out- her place is clean and she cares about her puppies- when you look at her site- look for Gabby in "puppies sold" copy and paste the link to your browser!! :) :) http://www.geocities.com/trcburkhart/ |
Well, I don't think we can tell you what to decide. Only you can make that decision, but I wish you luck. Don't settle for less than what you want, however, sometimes we forget that what seems less than perfect can be more than perfect for us and bring us more love than the perfection we have imagined. |
I also think you should wait for a yorkie. That's what you really want and if you get the Pom you may still want the yorkie. Maybe you can think of driving a little further out of your area. Or like Myfairlacy said, keep saving. But it's really your decision in the end. I do wish you the very best.:) |
have you checked our for sale forum here, there are some sweet babies forle right now:) also iam in mich, I might be able to help, feel free to pm me:) |
My ? is why a Girl and not a Boy? I have two Girls and a Boy yes Girls can get a Pretty dresses and all but there are so really cute boy clothes too. And if I had to pick a personality trait my Boy ( Kodi) has a better one than the Girls. He is my Man;) he is my cuddle bug and Loves to Play with Toys. Pixie my Younger Girl Loves Toys too but she is still under a Year. |

I have a boy and I love him more than life. I understand your wanting to find a little girl to dress up though, if that's what you're looking for. I'm eventually adding a little girl to our family. You CAN find some pretty cute stuff for boys, it's just much much harded. These dogs have larger than life personalities though and once you fall in love with one, I don't think it'll matter whether it's a boy or a girl. They can steal your heart in a heartbeat! (No pun intended, lol). Maybe keeping your options open will help your search a little? Boys are also usually cheaper. :/ |

Me too! Dont get me wrong, just literally spent an entire day cleaning pee stains from my carpet, thus I am a little agitated today. |
I really don't know much about poms, so can't help you there. Have you thought about getting a Yorkie from rescue? I think there is an adoption fee, but it would be far less than a breeder's cost. Just thought! |
