It can in humans but, because dogs are carnivores, it is debatable for them. There are no scientific studies (that I have found) that link high protein diets to kidney disease in dogs. Now I do feed low protein because just as there is no evidence of high protein causing damage, there is no study of high protein not causing damage. But really there is no proof that it will hurt them.
