remove back AND front dewclaws. This is done when you have the tails docked

Yes, please...listen to advice given. No one is trying to bash you, I promise. Everyone here is concerned for the puppies..we love dogs here and want the best for them. It's important to continue learning...I just hope you'll learn from the experienced breeders on here and from those offering advice.

No jinx hon, just reality. Responsiblity with these little ones isn't just about making ourselves happy in the moment. Our happiness and joy at watching them is a gift to be enjoyed along with the peace of knowing we are making the best possible choices for their health, and the health of any whom they produce.

I remember the thread and I still stand behind what advice I gave...I will say I'm glad the bitch and puppies are doing well. That doesn't mean something won't pop up later not to say it will but it's always a possibility. I still say do your homework and keep studying and know the lines frontwards and backwards and front and back again!!
Trust me when I say it can pop up when you least expect it!!

I did read that thread. Although some of the posts were strong, I don't think the majority of concern was that your dog could have pups successfully. I think the concern was more for a lack of awareness as to the dogs history and potential for genetic problems.

I've always been interested in breeding Chihuahuas. I just adore the breed. But after talking with several women who have been breeding for 20+ years, I realized that to truly show a love of the breed, a thorough knowlege of each lines benefits and deficits are vital. Dogs are usually quite successful at reproducing! LOL...but it's what lies inside, the luxating patellas, the liver shunts, the heart defects, the hydrocephalus'...what hides in the DNA, that is the hard part. It may not show in one generation, or even two..but go back in your research and a weakness to watch for will reveal itself. And we have to be unselfish enough to NOT breed that beloved, cherished, 'perfect' pet if a weakness shows up. We have a choice.....WE have to make it a responsible one for any breed we love.

This is not meant to be in any way disheartening to you. However, I have had the experience of owning several loving 'results' of non-researched breeding. One had hydrocephalus, one had atlanto-axial subluxation, two have grade 4 luxating patellas and two had grade 3 heart murmurs. The first two needed neurosurgery. Their total bill was about $4,800.00. And those precious ones had to be re-homed with a vet. tech at the Neurosurgery Clinic of Maine. Of the babies with LP, one had to have her right knee repaired at the cost of $750.00 five years ago, she's nine now and has arthritis. The two with heart murmurs were on cardizem and lasix until they passed away.

I promised myself that until I was prepared to research as much genetic history as possible, and then also prepared to purchase from a line that was supported by that...that I wouldn't do it. What if on of my beloved dogs produced a baby that needed open heart surgery? That needed liver shunt surgery? Am I in a position to support that emotionally, financially, and responsiblity wise? For me, the answer was no.

See, I've been, and currently am, on the other end. I'm daily loving and caring for someone else's desire to let their much loved pet 'just have a litter'. She's old now, and not well. Spinal problems, knee problems, various neurosis and skin ailments. And I love her. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

AWESOME post! Thank You! - Exactly how I feel. And I am glad the Mom delivered the pups with no problems, however, I still stand behind everything I have said in the previous thread.

Glad to hear the pups are doing well! Please reconsider your reaction to the wonderful advice given here. Sure, you can turn a blind eye...but I hope that you choose to reread what has been said. Truly, the best interest of those little furballs is all anyone has in mind.

I'm not a breeder, but after reading the intelligent and thoughtful posts of the many wonderful breeders here for the past 2 years, I have developed a great respect for the work that they do and the seriousness with which they approach their role. Please don't discount their combined experience...

Default No attack meant..

This was in no way meant to feel as an attack on you. I still think you've missed the point and I won't post again.

Although I wish your babies nothing but a wonderful, healthy, long life, please consider not breeding again. Enjoy these babies, and consider yourself happy..please. Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should.

Take a minute and go to the forum on Yorkie illnesses. Read the R.I.P.'s. Just as in any breed, Yorkies have their problems. Learn about them, research them and be prepared should you encounter them. You'll be happier for it.

Enjoy your precious little ones.

Joy

Default Uncalled for...........

OK....I am new to this forum. I had originally "Wished well for both Mom and puppies."....did not take part in old post....wasn't even a member yet. But, after reading this..."Look... I dont mean to come off like i dont care, I do! but you all come off as "Bitches" for real. I know you all know but that doesnt mean that you totally attack me for learning!." I had to look at profile and see the age of this poster. A person in their 20's....young but grown but not mature. It's ashame the poster isn't "wise" enough to see the excellant advice and guidance this group has to offer on behalf of the dogs. I still wish the Mom and pups the best!! Good Luck.

My thoughts exactly! This girl needs to do some growing up. Hope the mom and pups do great.

That wasn't at all called for!

The reception you received here at YT has NOTHING to due with the fact that you made some mistakes with breeding, as we ALL make mistakes and none of us start out knowing everything. The risks that others have painstakingly taken the time to try to warn you and educate you about could have and still may end up being much more of an issue than you realize. From the first time you posted, members here have been bending over backwards to give you the advice you needed to hear, nothing more--members that have SEEN and EXPERIENCED the heartbreak and harshness of inexperienced breeding that you have been fortunate enough to avoid. Is the truth always pretty and always what you want to hear? No, it's not, but it is still important that you be aware of the dangers and prepared for anything that could come you're way, not for your own sake, but for your dogs'.
If you play with fire and risk with the life of your female and her pups and with luck on your side, you came out on top, even if only for the time being, that is something you should be THANKFUL for.
Arrrrgh! I am honestly at a loss for words here, as I don't know how else to convey to the seriousness of this whole situation and breeding in general and I seriously doubt it would matter or do any good anyway.

You are right about one thing though:

Yes, you are correct, there would be alot less yorkies in the world. Alot less with trachea issues, LP, congenial heart issues, liver shunt and all the other breed specific genetic disorders that so many seem all too willing to downplay and pass on to future generations of innocent dogs, not to mention unsuspecting owners who come on here with broken hearts describing.
GOOD breeders can pride themselves on taking extreme measures to do their part in eliminating such issues from their lines and protect the breed by only breeding dogs with backgrounds that prevent the continued spread of these disorders.
So in that aspect, I agree with you 100%. There would be fewer Yorkies in the world if more breeders were picky about what they bred.
