| who should get to "own" the name? hey everyone, i wanted to ask your opinions...i am sure you have covered this numerous times before but i am a newer member (although i lurked a while!) due to some rather unfortunate events (and unfortunate experience with some breeders) we are no longer getting our one boy puppy we are still getting our yorkie bentley and he will be here on dec 28th we are sooooo excited about this and have everything ready for him! but anyhooo in the meantime, we decided to look for a little girl ... and we found our perfect baby girl and if all goes well we will be getting her over the christmas break...we always wanted to name her "bella" and planned on doing so...when speaking about her, we refer to her as "bella" ... well we have been speaking to my fiances sister during this time since she has a furbaby and we had questions for her on training, upbringing, grooming, etc ... and we had mentioned when we got a girl we wanted to name her bella...she never said a word... well now that the time is getting near, she tells him SHE claimed the name to name her firstborn daughter (she is not married, engaged, pregnant or anything along those lines) and said bentley and >insert any name here< sounds so much better than bentley and bella she said we were not allowed to use the name! is this fair?? i guess the thing that really upsets me is that my fiance and i are unable to have children of our own and our furbabies will BE our children...i just wondered if i was being unreasonable for being so hurt about this... on a happier note, my baby girls mommy right now has named her a beautiful name so we could always call her that although we had our hearts set on bella your opinions please?? and PLEASE tell me if i am being a brat or unreasonable...maybe i am being selfish?

| I say go ahead and name your new little furbaby Bella. You guys were the ones who initially mentioned the name and she isn't even pregnant! It might be different if she was expecting a baby girl and fell in love with the name.

| well the way I see it... you mentioned it first....................so it's yours fair and square. Now I think she liked it so much she might want to use it.. then by all means, but she does not have the right to tell you can't use it.... just my .02 cents.

| I guess it comes down to whether you want to keep peace in the family. If so, I'd go with another name - though in reality when she finally does have a baby, she probably won't even use that name!!!!!

| If you want to name your dog Bella, then name her Bella! Who cares what her breeder has her named now. She will become YOUR dog so YOU get to name her whatever YOU want. Now the fact that her breeder (your future sister-in-law) wants to name her first born daughter Bella, who cares...she can still name her that if she wants. But you know, what IF she never even has a daughter or what if she changes her mind about that name. Honestly, Bella for a person sounds SO strange to me because I know so many dogs named Bella LOL. Anyway, name her Bella if you want. You can have a niece AND a dog named Bella

| thanks!!! whew!! i feel better! and the breeder we are getting our baby from is not my sister in law but the way i worded it kind of makes it sound like it huh? my future sister in law has her own furbaby and has a while so she has been through all the growing pains! and i thought bella was kind of a furbaby name...kind of like when i hear people name their (skin) girls molly..i personally know AT LEAST 5 dogs named molly i feel so much better! i think we should stick to bella too...by the time she has kids, she will have 80 other names picked out by then (like a previous poster said!) ... although the whole keeping the family peace thing is something to consider

| You name that baby girl whatever you want to name her..heck, I named my youngest son the same as my sisters sons name(my nephew), but we spelled our sons name Scot, instead of with 2 t's..I can't believe she would get upset over that, heck, she may never have children, and if she does, they may all be boys.. |

| I agree, you can't just call a name and it be yours forvever and nobody else can use it. She's not even pregnant! That being said, I agree with another person who said it depends on how much you want to keep the peace. Since she claims she "called" the name first, she will probably always argue that point with you you'll probably never be able to convince her that you "called" it first. |

| I have to agree with everyone else. If you want to name her Bella, then name her Bella. You want a name that you really love and it is a special name because you picked it out for her. So if you really want to name her Bella go for it, don't let anyone stop you. She is your baby and you have the right to name her whatever you want. I like the name Bella by the way, I think it is really cute.

| Ask almost any woman out there...she's probably had her unborn child out there named for years (she's also likely changed it along the way too). Now, ask any woman out there with a child...and you will find that some used the chosen name, some didnt. I, for one, decided YEEEEAAAAARS ago, that my daughter would be named Asia Kay. (ok, I'm embarassed...it kinda sounds stripperish/escortish). But when my daughter was born, she was given another name entirely. Name your baby Bella. Sister in law will get over it. Its a name. When her time comes, she can still name her child (who might end up a boy) whatever she wants. Its a name. (I might feel differently if you were having a human baby and "stole" the name....but I'd only feel that way if she was preggo and knew she'd be having a girl). NAME YOUR BABY BELLA and dont feel bad about it! |
