I was just floored when I made those calls today, and for these people to not even know what liver shunt was and then to brag at how they just bought two dogs and decided to breed

......I was so torn on telling them (nicely of course) that if they wanted to breed they really should do so research and reading before doing so because the clearly don't have a clue as to what there doing.....or just hanging up.

...I just hung up .....

I had a past coworker buy a tiny chihuahua puppy (only like 7 or 8 weeks old) who was having major hypoglycemia problems at the very beginning. She returned her to the breeder to keep for a while longer...and when the breeder took the puppy to the vet, she found out the puppy had liver shunt and the puppy was put to sleep. She wouldn't give my coworker her money back but said she could have a puppy from her next litter. The breeder told her that she had a few before with liver shunt and it just happened sometimes and then went on to tell her it wasn't genetic... Umm...it IS genetic

... I had a friend looking at Maltese sites recently also, and she called me over to look at a posted pup......No kidding, my first reaction was," EEEWWWW, That's a Maltese?!".....The hair was sparse, the eyes and feet where all stained, it just looked ill.....I told her run like h***....

Doing all that shows a breeder's love of the breed and their commitment to keep their chosen breed looking and acting like it is supposed to.

I think it's great that you did your research, and are going to get a pup from a reputable breeder.

She was given to me as a gift and I know she didn't come from a good breeder. But when I buy my next yorkie, it will surely come from a good one

I just think it's such a shame that when I do look for a yorkie that it seems like I have to weed through the bad before I can find the good, the bad ones seem more of the norm out there .....it's very scary purchasing a pup out there....

I certainly don't expect show quality, but I would like a decent representation of the breed, and a healthy one at that.....Your probably better armed with info when you go on your search, that puts you ahead of the game....I hope you have better luck than I did....

They all wanted to release at 8 weeks (I know, that is kind of ok) but I would have liked to have heard at least 10 weeks.....when I asked one how big was mom and dad, she said mom was 8lbs. and dad was 13lbs., I about fell over.....One said, "she got one from her sister and bought another one and just had a litter, just because all her friends wanted her to do so"....One proudly said he had "all different sizes to chose from, I always have lots of puppies!"....

In addition, I've seen so many yorkies on web site that don't even look like yorkies, they looked more like Benji....and the prices where outrageous for a pet....too many pups and on and on

....

i agree!! its hard work.. i respect all the GREAT breeders out there & on YT!
we need more people like you guys.. who know their stuff, love/care about their dogs & the owners they are going to, stand behind what they say, and make sure its all done knowledgably!! I truly believe the great breeders out there do it as a passion, which makes them so wonderful!! thanks.

(i say this because we are looking into getting another yorkie sibling for Avie.. in the near future! and along with finding the perfect dog for us, i want a breeder who i know loves and cares about her own as i do mine(of course with all her knowledge of breeding, etc.)

which is why i started researching breeders months beforehand.

I probably won't be able to get another one until I'm out of school in 3-4 years (although I'm dying for another one right now!). I've already started saving websites of breeders I like (maltese and yorkie)..so when the time comes, I'll already know of breeders I want to contact

It is great that you have researched and thought about the ups and downs of the quality of our little furbabies. Its great when you go in knowing exactly what the necessary qualities should be.

My Lady is a rescue and from a backyard breeder. I wouldn't trade her for the world, but my next puppy will be from a reputable show breeder. Lady has so many health problems, all which didn't start until she was almost five years old. She's diabetic, epileptic, hypothyroid, arthritic, has allergies and a Grade 1 heart murmur!

Her medications cost me $250 a month. Between those and her vet bills to monitor all her conditions, I could buy a female Maltese puppy from a top tier show breeder every year!

As far as not being show quality, as long as Lady and Lacy keep dressing so well, no one will ever know that they're not Best in Show!

Wow! Lady sure was lucky to get a great home with you! Hopefully Lacy stays healthy and won't ever need surgery for her LP, but I'm afraid she will need it eventually. Her right knee is pretty bad

Yes, our girls are dressed quite well I think!

I meet a lady recently who has a 3 lb female and she wanted to know if I knew anyone with a small male she could breed her with I told her she was too small to breed and she said her vet told her it would be just fine to breed her I told her I would never breed such a small female it wouldn't be worth it to me I even invited her to YT hoping she would learn but haven't anyone from around here sign up

I can't believe there are vets out there that say it's okay to breed a 3lb dog

I've seen owners say that a few times on here...that their vet said it was fine. Hmm...well, how's that vet going to feel when the 3lb dog DIES because it was too small to give birth and the owner was clueless about what to do???

Excellent thread! I, too, have learned a lot from the reputable breeders at YT and applaud their efforts.

I will probably never own a "standard" or even "close to standard" yorkie, as I've made a commitment to only bring rescues into my family (Bernie, you lovable guy, you made a believer out of me

). But, if I ever change my mind and decide to purchase a yorkie, you better believe, I'm heading to YT first to get the scoop on any breeder I consider.
