Excellent thread!!! I agree THANK YOU BREEDERS that stick to the standard's I know it's very hard work, and very expensive to breed the right way.

As far as not being show quality, as long as Lady and Lacy keep dressing so well, no one will ever know that they're not Best in Show!

Lady's first mom tied her outside in 100 degree heat during thunderstorm season with no food or water when she moved away. It was three days before she was rescued.

We think Lady had started to have seizures and her so-called mom just couldn't handle it. I am so glad she found her way to me because she was diagnosed with diabetes just a year and half later. If her first owner wouldn't deal with seizures, I'm sure she wouldn't have treated her diabetes and lady would have died a terrible, unnecessary death.

She's such a sweet girl. She's about bankrupt me, but I love her!

Oh my gosh...that's aweful! A Little White dog in 100degree weather with no water...that's terrible Okay, I don't agree with rehoming, but if you are going to tye your little dog outside and not give it food or water and just leave it to die...then it is better to even take your dog to the shelter than just leave it to die People can be terrible..

Well, I know you've made up for her terrible first home. Hopefully she doesn't even remember it anymore... She's living a good life now for sure!

Before I found YT I was going to get Yorkie from a pet store at the mall. The more I read the more I realized why I should find a reputable breeder and suck up my urge to "have one right now" and wait until I find the right breeder.

The first place I went to was www.ytca.org (Yorkshire Terrier Club of America). They have a list of their members in each state and I emailed every member in CO. If you read the membership requirements it is not easy to become a member and I thought that if you took the time to be a part of the YTCA you have a genuine interest in the breed. Do you know members of the YTCA can't even use the word teacup, tiny specialist, doll faced or anything similar in their advertising? Thats say A LOT!

I went to a couple dog shows and met a couple of the YTCA members and they were very helpful. Both of my Yorkies are from one of them and I am so happy I waited. My breeder was going to keep my little Izzy for showing but she didn't grow big enough, she's almost 4 lbs. My breeder said that girls over 5 lbs show better and are much healthier to have litters with. That tells me right there is interested in the breed and the health of her dogs.

Where would I be without YT??!

Wow! Just proof that education about petstores and reputable breeding really CAN make a difference

That is the very best way to find a breeder, either by checking the breeder's list recommended by the breed club or to go to local dog shows to meet breeders. That's a great way to get to know some of the smaller show breeders who may be very reputable, just not that well known.

I am so glad you didn't get your puppy from a pet shop!

I was looking for a close good breeder because I'm kicking around the idea of getting one more yorkie .... and was having no luck on any breeder sites....Soooo, the DH suggests I call some in the local paper, after all, they're half price....Wooo-Hoo for him, so I thought I'd amuse him

I called three....the prices ranged from $500-$800 for a female....when I asked all three for a written health contract I got complete silence, one didn't even know there was such a thing, and she wanted to know what it covered and she had never heard of L.P. or liver shunt the other two said no. ....two ads ( not the ones I called) wanted $500 or obo ... They all wanted to release at 8 weeks (I know, that is kind of ok) but I would have liked to have heard at least 10 weeks.....when I asked one how big was mom and dad, she said mom was 8lbs. and dad was 13lbs., I about fell over.....One said, "she got one from her sister and bought another one and just had a litter, just because all her friends wanted her to do so"....One proudly said he had "all different sizes to chose from, I always have lots of puppies!"....

In addition, I've seen so many yorkies on web site that don't even look like yorkies, they looked more like Benji....and the prices where outrageous for a pet....too many pups and on and on ....

To all you breeders care about the breed.....

I'M SORRY and THANK YOU ...THANK YOU!!
Good thread!!!!! I think that it was good that you called around. That way, you know what is really out there...nothing but BYBs!!!!

I have now a new appreciation for all the long hard work that goes into knowing the lines you chose, doing the health checks on moms and dads, and all the work in making sure the pups and parents are well cared for in their diet and their grooming.....I only have two and sometimes I wonder how a breeder does this with more.....your free time must be very limited......

You people deserve every penny you ask for, now when I see pups that are healthy and they look well cared for and the parents looked loved and happy I now know this breeder went the extra mile to do her best and she really cares.... to bad it's not the norm out there....it makes me so sad when I get on this forum and I go into the sick section and see all the ill pups in there...

keep teaching, preaching and nagging, I now understand!!!

You have found out what I have been telling local people here for ages. As a breeder, I know my babies are priced higher than what most people around charge for theirs. I have been to some of these peoples homes andd looked at their dogs before I bought my first one. What I saw, didn't even resemble a yoprkie. I didn't even know they were supposed to look different until I got on here a few years ago and started searching and researching. I even had one lady tell me she had never seen a males ears stand up when I asked about the ears. Erect ears are a very big thing for me. This lady has been a breeder for many years. Also, sometimes I get a wild hair you know where and call some of the people in the paper. When I get as far as asking, "what's your bloodline"? They say, what's that? And I tell them thanks and hang up. People jump on those 350-500. dogs around here and most of them are clueless like I was and think they got a good deal because of the money. But when they look at a high quality puppy and realize the difference, they will pay more money.

I'm so glad I didn't buy from a petstore either. I just LOVE Xena and Izzy and wouldn't trade them for the world. I was really lucky in getting 2 all around good dogs. (Although they did chew up the carpet in my bedreoom the other day).

Ha ha ha! I thought I was the only one!! My mom gave me a one dog rule until I move out (which will be after graduation [4-5 years] for financial reasons), but don't think I'm not snooping around already!! I have a whole folder in my favorites FULL of potential breeders in my area! I can hardly wait until then!!
