| Did/do your babies bite? I am having a really hard time teaching Dash not to bite. I know he is just a puppy and thats what they do and I've tried to give him something he CAN bite on when he tries to bite. He's not biting cords or anything (thank goodness) just our fingers!!! I'm just afraid that he'll never get over this bad habit. Any advice?? |

| Hi, When their puppies they tend to nip at your fingers.Trust me I know,I have 3.They will grow out of it.I give them rawhide, everytime they try to bite just put him back down and in a stern voice say NO.But eventually they do outgrow it. Other members will have different solutions, try what works best for you.But the key is to be consistent.Don't scold him today and let it pass the next time. This will confuse him.Hope this help and good luck

| You might see this advice on another post but will offer again. When your puppy tries to use your hands as toys, do not allow it. Say no, put your palms out and tell him you are not his toy, go and get a toy and allow him to play with you, with the toy. Before long, he will go get a toyand bring it to you to play. When mine want to play, I always tell them to go get their toy first and then we play. My hubby thought it was cut, at first, so Chloe and Lacey just loved to bite at his hands. That is, until they were older and it wasn't so cute, it hurt. I hated to tell him I told you so, but I did. |

| When I was taking my Gus to puppy training classes, there was a few puppies who were biters. Those new baby teeth can really hurt. One of the owners just couldn't break the habbit. The trainer told her to use sour apple. It is sold at Pet Smart. It's a spray that you spray on what ever you dont want the pup to chew or bite. After a few days of telling the dog no and spraying a very small amount directly in his mouth every time he bit, she broke that happit real quick. He tried to nip every so often but all the owner had to do is show him the spray and that was the end of that. By the end of the six week course he was no longer biting.

| Try puppets... A dozen or so years ago with my first puppy, I went to a Toys R Us and bought hand puppets so that he thought he was chewing on a toy, and I could move it around to keep it interesting for him. He loved them!! I haven't been able to find any puppets for Dublin, so I actually got one of those covers that they put on golf clubs that has the stuffed head of a dog on top. I slip it down over my arm and he wrestles and chews on it and I don't get torn up hands. (Kinda like a puppet, right?) Actually cought him humping it on the floor the other night, so I guess he really likes it! LOL

| Ahia was really bad about biting and chewing on my hands or feet or arm or leg or toe or fingers or any thing that she saw comming or going or sitting. LOL. she doesnt do that as much now a days. I found suggestion on this forum that i tried and it works best. Just plain say "ouch!" she stops. Growling and taking my self aways helps a bit too. you got to act like a dog to communicate with them. so needless to say its a "dogs life"

| Thank you! Thank you! I think I'm going to go out tomorrow and get the bitter apple spray. He just needs a more direct approach than just saying no. I'm going to try to say OUCH and give him the spray. Thank you guys so much!! I'll keep you updated!! |

| biting seems to be a terrier trait, every terrier i have ever known has been a little nipper....... toby does it occasionally, but no is usually enough to get him to stop..... or "ouch", when we say ouch he backs off immediatly |

| Pebbles does not bite us but the problem starts when she puts something in her mouth that she is not suppose to be eating. She will growl and bite me because I am trying to take whatever it is out of her mouth.

| SarahG I did the bitter apple thing with Coco. Man was she a biter! We started calling her Kujo. But it only took 2-3 times of getting a small drop of that stuff in her mouth that she quit. Now when she nips while excited, I just say no and show her the bottle. She quickly covers her face with her paws. There is hope. I thought she would never outgrow it but they do. They only outgrow it though if you discourage the behavior. If you don't do anything, they might not outgrow it. DASH, STOP BITING MOMMA.

I know you have been advised ump-teen ways, but when all else fails--try giving him a thump on the nose. Thump as hard as you would, if you were thumping a bug off your shoulder. This was the ultimate solution for me. When I would thump Maggie, I would also say "No Bite". She no longer even thinks about it and she is still a puppy (4 months old). This advice came to me from a dog trainer.
