Go with what your heart tells you. But I do like the idea of letting her pick the puppy out. If she does then maybe she will be more responsible about having a puppy

She is not a college student, She works for the school She is not moving anywhere, lol she just moved out she has many friends and her social life is spent mostly with me She is a very mature young lady, trust me

I say, do what Lacy's mom has suggested. Your daughter sounds like a responsible, level headed adult. That might be the best gift, and it is something you can do together. Since, I am sure mom misses her little girl being at home.

Good point. I was going to say the same thing, if she's responsible and dependable to take care of it, that would be a great idea!

I wouldn't generalize students and young people to that extent. I am a sophomore in college, and I know that I spend more time with my babies now, than I will once I get a full-time job, because of the way my time is distributed. I really see nothing wrong with moving from place to place...I'm pretty sure older people do that also.

A good doggy mom will be a good doggy mom whether she's a student, or retired! Its all a matter of making your baby your priority. There will always be other obligations, but someone who is dedicated and mature enough will always find a way to make things work, and keep their baby happy.

I could go into detail about how great of a life Wobie and Woda have, even though I'm a student, but this isn't my thread...

The unforunate thing about communicating online is our tone can be misread. I hope you didnt take offense cause I didn't mean it in a negative way.

Sorry I must've misread. I wasn't trying to say she's immature or irresponsible. For some reason, I was under the impression she moved out to start college. I was once a college student and I know how hectic life can be during those years - that's all.

From what you are saying, it sounds like she's mature and ready to have a pet. You are her mother and know her best. No advice needed here.

You're absolutely right, nothing wrong with college students or moving from places to places. I was speaking from my past experience as a college student. Let's just say I wasn't a wealthy college student so it wasn't easy to find an afford apartment or more so a place that allow pets so that's why I express concern. College life for me and my friends means constantly on the go. Aside from daily classes, we took many trips to explore the world and join various activities. Experiencing the "real world" for the first time can be fun and a bit overwelming. At the time I also wanted a pet, but held off knowing my schedule is ever changing. Of course, everyone experience things differently, I was simply speaking from my own experience. Please don't take it personal.

I posted that comment in a rush because I was meeting someone for lunch. I normally read my comments over and over to make sure I don't offend anyone. Though my words may not be very articulate at times, I don't mean to hurt anyone

I agree.

Not every young person is irresponsible, not every young person goes out every single night, and not every young person moves around a lot (although I'm not sure what that has to do with anything- if you find pet-friendly housing, why does it matter?).

You are right about a lot of college students that get dogs. College Station is home to Texas A&M University and almost 50,000 students. The animal shelter here receives almost 500 dogs and cats a month (both strays and owner surrenders). In the months of May and December, they get closer to 1000! Students graduate and move away and leave their pets behind

However, a lot of college students can be very responsible for pets. I was a freshman in highschool when I got my cat, Kira. She stayed with my parents my freshman year in college since I lived in a dorm. I then moved into a townhouse and brought her down here with me. I then got Lacy my sophomore year in college and just got another cat, Sophie, this past April. I'm in my first year of vet school now, and no matter how busy I get - my pets are the most important to me. Lacy is pretty much my number 1 priority - I don't go out much because I'd rather be at home with her or run errands and take her with me. I can't imagine why all these students choose to give up their pets because they are moving. I would NEVER do that with mine.

Anyway, I know you said she's not a college student...just wanted to respond
to the comment about it. You know your daughter and know if she's responsible and it sounds like she is. Gosh, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE for my parents to tell me I can get another dog for Christmas...I've been working on that for three years! I don't even care if they help pay for it...just would love for them to say I can get one (they own my house and still pay for my school so they have a say in my pets )

Oh don't worry! I wasn't hurt or offended!

I was just offering another perspective, because I know there are a lot of yorkie mommies on here that are in college.
