Puppy For Christmas ?? Hello friends;) I have a question for you all:D Ok, I posted a few weeks about my youngest daughter moving out:( things are going very well, except for one thing, she misses the babies real bad, she even asked if she could take one home with her, of course i said no, I was thinking about a baby for christmas for her, my friend has a liter of s**tzue babies ready at the end of this month, Do you think this is a bad idea:confused: My daughter goes to school from 7 - 10 then home, then work from 4-6 so she would be home most of the time, I think thats why she is getting lonely:( please give me some feedback, i want to make the right decsion:cool: |
Since she is a student, I would say no against a puppy. There is so much more work involved with a brand new puppy. If you are really set on getting her a dog, find a young or adult one from a shelter or rescue. Alot of rescues foster their dogs first, so they may be house broken or on their way to be, some basic obedience, socialiation, etc. Puppies all ways find homes, but there are so many more dogs out there that need them. |
I wouldn't just because she is a student. Maybe for a graduation gift? |
I wouldn't, but you know her best. I would just think that if she's just starting out, she would enjoy the freedom of doing whatever she wants and having a puppy is such a big commitment. |
If she's a dependable young lady, I say go for it...it's always nice to have a puppy/dog to come home too..When I got my shih tzu, I worked 12 hour days(on 2 off two), she did fine, and got so much love when i did get home..Heck, I just gave my son and his fiance a yorkie puppy and they love him to death..spoil him rotten;) I do watch him for them on Tuesdays, as his fiance has nursing school all day, and son is gone for 12 hours, but, the other days, his fiance is never gone for more the 3-4 hours, and little Teddy has his food/water/pee pad and bed in his xpen. But, this little guy brings so much joy to them...There are a lot of them on here that aren't home all day with their yorkies, that work or have school..! You know your daugther, no one else does, if you feel she's responsible, and she really wants one, GO FOR IT!! |
I think if she's the type that can take care of a little one than I would. You know her better than anyone. If she's ready financialy, and can spend the time with a pup then I would think it was ok. I know I would have been able to and would have had one if it were me. I'm sure you will make the best choice for her ;) Good luck!!! |
You know your daughter best, so if you think she can handle the responsibility, then I say go for it! If you get the puppy for her, then she can use her money to buy it the things it needs. I got Mr. Biggs my 3rd year in college. I went to school full time and had just stated working. My mother was totally against me getting a dog, but if I had listed to her, then we wouldn't have Mr. biggs. Having him made me even more responsible in that I picked up more hours to make more money for the things he needed and to buy him tons of clothes. lol. Oh, and he definately made me a lot less lonely and a lot less homesick. lol :) |
Thanks for your replies;) She is very mature and helped me raise everyone of my babies, Im not going to jump into this just yet, I dont want her to be home sick, but im sure thats normal, You are all right , I know her best;) So i guess i just anwsered my own question:animal36 |
I got my yorkie (Chloe) when I was in College and she was very well taken care of...I think with her really wanting one and having already contributed to taking care of yours, she'll probably do well with a little one! Your know your daughter best and if you think she's a responsible young woman than I would say go for it! I did and she's the love of my life and definitely kept me from being so home sick! |
if she would take care of it .. i say YES! I'm still a student and i've gotten all four of my dogs while in college and anyone that knows me knows how well taken care of and spoiled my dogs are! |
I would not just surprise her with a puppy. I wouldn't want my parents to just surprise me with any puppy. Instead, why don't you and her look for a puppy together. That way you'll know what breeds she wants, gender, color, personality, age, etc. You could come up with some kind of fun and creative way to tell you want to give her a puppy on Christmas and then start looking for a puppy together |

And that is the most spoilt rotten dog I have seen...:p I agree with the post above....You two look together and let her pick her "present" out. Here's my humble opinion, college students normally move from places to places. Always on the go. Along with educational obligation, she's young and will have much of a social life going out with her friends and participating in various activities that may prevent her from staying home with her puppy. Having a young puppy will provide companionship, however soon your daughter will have to divide her time with school, work, friends, and etc. Pets require a lot of attention and soon she'll feel torn and stressed out. Many people purchase a dog for companionship when they come home, but they don't realize that when they are away, the pet is very lonely. |
Do you know, that it's a fact, that dogs (most typical dogs), sleep 20 out of 24 hours a day...you can put a camera on them, when you're gone all day at work, 9 times out of 10, they're sleeping! Heck, I'm home with mine all day, 1/2 the time, I have to get down on the floor and start playing with them to get them out of bed! |
