Default Strangers wanting to pick your baby up...

I just came back from a holiday visiting my family in Essex and had a fab time..it was the first time i had taken Pixie away on holiday with me and she was so well behaved and of course she was the star everywhere we took her! A couple of people wanted to pick her up when meeting her which makes me very nervous..mainly because i am terrified of someone dropping her..she's very tiny and has a very slight frame and if she was dropped i dread to think what would happen. One lady i met had a little 16 year old pomeranian, she was very pleasant but asked me if she could 'take Pixie and show her to her friend' who was a little way down the beach from us. she was ready to take her out of my arms! my reaction was maybe a little rude..i said, 'oh no! i'm sorry but you can't hold her'! i then explained that she wriggles quite alot and i was worried she would be dropped... she looked a little surprised and said something about being used to wriggly puppies. I might have been a little abrupt but i'm so paranoid with her..i'm constantly looking for hazards everywhere we go with her..children, traffic. large dogs etc etc. How do you guys all deal with people wanting to pick up your babies? especially children..a little girl asked to hold her too and i said the same thing about her being a bit wriggly...i could tell the mother thought i was being a bit mean by not letting her daughter hold her.

Absolutely positively no strangers are aloud to hold Ellie period. That is way too dangerous with the theft rate. They can pet but cannot hold (I really don't get asked if they can hold her though).

I usually tell people that if they want to hold my dogs they can as long as they sit down and hold him/her in their lap under my supervision. With kids I would ask them to sit cross legged on the floor. That way they get to enjoy holding her but you get to make sure its safe. Also I will attach their lead to the harness and hold it while they have the dog on their lap.

I completely agree with you. I hate when ppl ask to pick her up or even pet her. A stranger in the street isnt going to ask to pick up your baby so why do they feel like they could touch and pick up your dog. I especially hate it when ppl just walk up and pet her without asking!!!

Cody is in the stage right now where he doesn't like new people touching him or getting too close. If they try to touch him he wiggles and spazzes out. I tell them he doesn't like strangers and he wiggles too much to be held. He's a mamma's boy for sure ! some people that are strange he will sniff but others i guess theres something about them he senses and spazzes out. so we go on our way quickly

people think I am weird but that is part of the reason I have a stroller. The kids in my complex are never supervised. One kid pushed Aurora to the ground. Another tried to pull her leash out of my hand because they wanted to show her to her mom, when I said no, the kid swore at me.

One kid stopped us and was ordering us to let her out of the stroller, even after I said no....was easy to just keep walking past.

Maybe this is mean but after living around all these kids that run wild, I has made me not want kids, just more yorkies. Before I get bashed, yes I know its how they are raised.

i dont think its over protective at all! i would never let any stranger hold dexter. i think its weird when people just come up and pet him too. i usually cary him in my sweater and people will come up to me and start petting him without even saying hello to me or asking!

I thought it was cheeky of this lady to just presume i would hand her over like that! she literally had her hands out ready to just take her! I didn't pick up her pomeranian or even ask to! you just feel when you have a small puppy that they become almost public property wherever you go. I understand people wanting to come and meet an adorable tiny puppy but i just find some people can be so pushy and just dont understand the reason why when you refuse them. Someone i knew years ago got a Bichon puppy and someone dropped it and broke its leg, it was never the same again afterwards.

People can be quite presumptious sometimes, just yesterday I had some business to talk with the lady who owns the bird feed store. She had a customer who literally just bent down, and said "how would you like to be picked up?" and scooped Chip off the floor. I was a bit mortified at first, and watched her like a hawk, she put him down gently and an associate of the store gave him some treats. When I'm out in public kids and people are usually pretty good about asking to pet him, that incident was the first "picking up". Mind you Chip is 15lbs so its not as tempting to pick him up as the little ones.

I really can't believe that woman at the beach would expect you to hand over your dog to show someone, if she wanted her to see your dog she should of came over. It's just like saying can I borrow your car to show my friend, and handing over the keys.

I'm in the same boat! No skin kids thank you just furry ones
Some kids can be really awful, and if they were allowed to play with your dogs heaven forbid what they would do with them.

That's funny, I was just about to post a quesiton like this! I took Mocha to the mall the other day and we were swarmed by people who wanted to see him and pet him. Petting's ok with me, but it makes me nervous if people want to hold him. I actually only had one person ask to hold him, but I let her because she was an employee at the store I was shopping in, so there was no way she could just take off with him. It made me think about what I would say if somebody else like a random stranger asked if they could hold him. I don't want to be rude, but how do you tell people "no" in a nice way? I'm even nervous with my co-workers holding him. I'm so afraid they're going to drop him or handle him to rough

I just say, I'm sorry she is real skittish amd may try to jump out of your arms so I can hold her while you pet her if you like. If they don't like it to darn bad, They won't be the one with an injured puppy.

I won't let people hold mine either. If I like them I will let them pet my boys. If I don't know them and not sure about them. Then I tell them no you may look but please no touch. We are in training.

Don't let strangers hold your baby or walk away with them in their arms. I prob. would have had a fit if a lady asked me if she could take one of my babies to show her friend lol I always say flat out "NO" I tell them they don't like strangers holding them and get nervous and start to shake, and even may bite lol none of my babies bite but hey if i have to lie oh well.
