I think I would rather he go outside. I plan on leaving papers out at night, and if we have to be out of the house for a while. I'm not sure what the winter months will bring. We do not have a garage, but that sounds like a great alternative.

I love to have mine go outside when the weather's nice, but the winters are nasty and there are times when the snow is too deep, pouring rain, etc. But if you still wanted to train just for outside, maybe you could take a puppy pad just outside the door on the porch or something for bad weather. Give him somewhere to go outside without having to explore the entire yard.
