| Protecting her crate? Aggression We have noticed that our yorkie, about 18 months now is starting to come at us when we try to pull her from her crate. She may have crawled into the crate with a sweater on and when my daughter puts her hand in the crate, the dog goes after her hand. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm worried.... Did we do something wrong? She is such a lovely sweet dog but what could be causing this behavior..... |

| Good question - I would also like to see the answers you get. You are not alone, Xena does that too with her x-pen.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | i would think that it would be cage aggression out of fear or protection of self and/or territory. This is not a good behavior. to eliminate it the simple thing would be to get rid of the crate, which may or may not be something you could do. Does she do this behavior with anything else? Is her crate open wire or closed in plastic? if you can, get an ex-pen that you can reach over to pick her up instead of reaching in. She may be afraid of the crate because she's being backed into it and grabbed at to get her out. Do you use the crate as a time out place or punishment place? is there anything bad associated with the crate? Have you tried luring her out with treats? Does she get a favorite toy or something yummy when she goes in her crate that she is perhaps possessive of? i'm just trying to think of things that can cause her to bite, be aggressive or be fearful.

| Only when she's retiring for the evening She usually loves going into her crate--she is in and out of it all day. The aggression only happens when she's really tired and ready for bed....if she crawls in with a bow or a sweater, we try to lure her out by putting our hands in the crate--we are trying to get her out of the sweater or take the bow off....she will come after our hand.if we stick it in the crate---I have just stopped putting my hand in the crate for the most part...but it did happen again to my daughter when she went to remove her sweater.....I think your suggestion of a treat might be a good way to get her to undo this behavior..... P.S. Thanks for the advice! Last edited by yorkiesinstowe; 09-18-2007 at 06:24 PM. Reason: Thank you |

| Their crates are their dens, so it would make sense that some would get very protective of it. A hand reaching in could be unnerving to a pup trying to get away by going in their crate. Since she loves her crate, I would hate to have her lose it. She obviously feels safe there. I agree - I would try luring instead of reaching in. See if you can eliminate the problem without turning her little world upside down. Let us know...............
